Found iPhone 4S

If I found an iPhone and could get into it the first thing I would be doing is calling some contacts!

He/She will be over the moon you found the phone for them! Do it now before they report it lost or stolen.

How can he call contacts with a passcode and siri off?

Firstly good job on being a good person and seeking returning it to the owner. I would probably use the IMEI number and take that to a carrier or apple leaving it with them to track down the owner. Might wanna leave your details too. never know you might get something for your trouble.

i say just keep the phone. The owner must have already claimed back thru their insurance. since he is a iphone user he probably have backed up already. lol :P

waiting for OP to post "it was 2am and the police came to my front door, they arrested me, I jsut got out on bail"

take it so the police station or drop it in the park... the owner will track the phone via gps and assume you stole it and smash your face in, or the police will come and do you for theft / theft by finding....

taken to the extreme if there are suspect pictures on the phone you could end up in prison...

The Police won't be coming.

In similar situations where it's been trackable on 'Find my iPhone' they just aren't interested and will tell you to speak to your insurance company instead.

There is also the fact that unless it's somewhere quite rural, you can't really narrow down exactly which house/building/flat it is in anyway.

If anything, the service is only of any real use if you generally lost it somewhere that nobody is going to have picked it up. Plus if it is stolen, you can have the peace of mind that you can totally wipe it.

I'd ring your local Apple store & tell them you have the phone but cannot get to the shop till Wednesday because of Business, This should cover you if anything happens. Once I had phoned the store I would leave it on in the hope the owner rang so I didn't have to go into town Wednesday.
Good on you for not being a moody ****.

Isn't this one of the reasons people society is turning to crap? This is theft.

I applaud the OPs attempts to return it, I just wish more people were like them than the above poster.

Not true!

Last month in New York

Met Police do it as well

They even offer advice on how to use find my iPhone

In all honesty though, I'd take it to the o2 store. They can trace the phone's user through the IMEI and return it. The police can do that, but it involves more paperwork for them - just cut out the middleman and take it straight to the store.

should the worst (all be it highly unlikely) happen, you may still get locked up until they can find who ever you spoke to... (even if its only overnight)

I still think take it straight to the police or drop it in the street / park...

Take the sim and stick it in your phone and see if you can import any contacts. If the person upgraded to the 4S from a candy bar phone, it may have contacts saved to the sim.

Also, try the most common pass codes, such as 1234, 2580, 0852, 0000 etc.

I have returned two phones to their owners who had dropped them when out and about and barely got a thank you from either so I wouldn't expect too much if you do contact the owner.

Nice to see that people do still have some kindness when it comes to these things though.

Yes there are some public cases of the Police having recovered them, but generally they won't bother. I've had a friend who had an iPad stolen, the other an iPhone, in both cases, even though they could see where they were, the Police didn't help and said they should speak to their insurance companies.

I know it sucks, but think about it, the Police have cutbacks in the current climate. They don't have time to go round trying to figure out which house or council estate flat a stolen phone might be in, especially when the insurance companies will just give out a new one.

And if they cut down the standard SIM from the candy bar phone rather than getting a new micro-SIM.

Had something come up that meant I would be busy Wednesday so skipped lunch and dropped the phone off at the nearest Police Station.

Discovered you can't receive unclaimed handed in mobile phones as they could contain personal data, didn't know that!

They said they would get the IMEI and contact the network provider and register the serial on reportmyloss.com so fingers crossed the owner will be reunited with his iPhone 4S.

Cant imagine police spending even 30 minutes to find out IMEI and link it to owners just to return a phone. I'm sure they just dump the thing:(
