Cutting up a chilli in the usual way, blade against the fingers with the tips tucked in to avoid the blade. But I get slightly distracted and as I move my hand along the chilli my fingertips stay in place.

It's very lucky that my fingers were almost perfectly horizontal. I sliced from the middle of my nail through it to the skin underneath but just missing actual flesh. I now have a rather large chunk of nail missing.

And because of the curve of a nail around the finger I have a nail that looks like a crab claw and is catching on everything.

Hurts like hell!

Getting chilli in a cut after being a spaz with a knife, christ it hurts! more than when you rub your nose/eyes after cutting them up :D I always wear disposable gloves to cut them up now

I did it a few months ago too - was a bit luckier though as I just nipped the fingertip of my thumb. (thumbtip?) All back and OK now, but it was a pain for a while to pick things up with that hand!

I shave the ends off my fingers on a regular basis, luckily the way I tend to have my fingers, I rarely catch more than that though. The Mrs is a bit of a nightmare though...

It's funny how my main argument to my gf for getting better knives was:

"sharper knives are actually SAFER, because they require less pressure when chopping"... Whilst this is true, I've still cut myself about 5 times as much with the sharper knives :p I know, I know, I'm doing it wrong!

I only ever cut myself with blunt crappy knives. I don't have that chef technique of slicing through stuff really quickly, so a sharp knife I find takes less hacking to get the job done (and less unintentional finger slicing).
