Maybe the vatican, being roman catholic, are worried about the UK being taken over by islamic millitants and are trying to sieze power, in which case, it can only be a good thing.

Sarcasm aside I'm not sure about the creditability of his statement. The reference comes from the World Gold Council FAQ, and the National Geographic article was published in January 2009 with a slightly lower figure, although I guess it could just be a reprint.
