FPS cap with no input lag? (Gysnc)

I've just installed a new motherboard, CPU and GPU to my PC but before I did that there was some kind of an FPS cap that matched my monitors refresh rate (100Hz), I couldn't for the life of me see where it was, it wasn't in game or vsync, or in Afterburner/RTSS or anywhere else that I could see. It worked really well because it kept my GPU quieter and didn't give me any noticeable input lag.

Now that I've installed the above components and a fresh install of Windows I've lost that feature and my 3090FE is super loud because it's banging out 200fps when it only really needs to do 100fps.

So, any ideas where that phantom FPS cap may have been set?

Also on my old build I was 99% sure that GSync had something to do with it because if I disabled GSync the FPS would sometimes vanish but the new build doesn't behave like that, GSync on or off the FPS isn't capped so it must have been something else.
 
Difficult to tell unless you let us know which monitor you're using, however the setup should be:

Gsync enabled for full screen in NCP
Vsync ON in NCP
Vsync OFF in game
Resolution set to FULL SCREEN in game

I've just enabled VSync globally in NCP so I'll see how I get on with it.

If you're experiencing input lag with the settings above, then add a global cap in RTSS set at 97 - in fact if you don't use RTSS then you can global cap in NVCP which may be what you had set previously.

You are right, it does have something to do with G-Sync. It's in the NVIDIA control panel. In 3D settings, you set the Max Frame Rate to two below your monitor, so 98Hz.

If you want 100fps instead of 200fps then you could have bought a 2060 instead.

It seems like a waste to me. Perhaps upgrade your monitor to 144hz and sync your FPS. Then at least you're getting a bit of benefit for the money you paid.

bf6 will be no more demanding than V gpu wise but will be on cpus the same way V evolved last year making lots of cpus unable to play it

if they push the GPU limits to high they lose to big an audiance


your pushing close to the limits on the i9/3090 with only a 850w psu combined they can pull in nearlly 800w at peak

you will be ok most of the time but avoid overclocking anything

I upgraded my CPU at the same time as the GPU so should be all set. And yeah I was aiming for a 3080ti so wasn't ready for the 3090 with regards to my PSU so I'll be changing that very soon.
 
Definitely want vsync forced off if you are worried about input lag. Capping fps slightly below 100 with gsync on is probably the best way to proceed, given you want to make the GPU quieter.

So VSync off and use RTSS to cap FPS?
I think NV control panel has a framerate limiter now so I would probably use that to avoid needing to run third party software. But I haven't researched whether there is any difference in input lag between capping methods.

Oh yeah, its called Max Frame Rate, I'll give that a go then instead. Nice one.
