FPS decrease when moving to larger resolutions, is there a linear relationship?

Hi all i'm intrigued by a new monitor in the near--ish future and was wandering if you say have 30% more pixels to render due to an increase in resolution, would you get 30% LESS total FPS?

1280x1024= 1, 310, 720 pixels

1680x1050= 1, 764, 000 pixels

1, 764, 000/ 1, 310, 720 = 1.35 i.e. 35% more pixels

Is that how it works? I know my 6800GE would NOT enjoy a 1680x1050 resolution yet my new X1950PRO might take to it well if given the chance

No.

Framerate is not solely dependent on resolution, there are many other contributing factors. The only time you would see a linear relationship is in cases where you are entirely fillrate limited, i.e. no cpu limitations whatsoever, no shader limitations etc, and no memory bandwidth limitations.

Generally speaking, if you decrease your resolution by 30%, your framerate will increase by less than 30% because other limitations start coming into play such as CPU, memory bandwidth and what have you. And obviously vice-versa applies, bumping up the res by 30% will likely see a FPS drop of less than 30%, unless you have a very weak GPU relative to your CPU.

That said I think there are cases when running very high resolutions with AA/AF that the drop is actually more severe, on weak cards with insufficient memory bandwidth.

So the relationship isn't terribly easy to predict. But if I had to speculate (based on benchmarks I've seen) I'd estimate that the x1950pro will be at worst 25% slower at 1680x1050 than it is at 1280x1024.

What you say makes good sense hangtime, glad I got the 512mb version, I hear that will handle higher res's a bit better?

V Annoyed here atm, got a pci-e power cable for my card only to find it doesn't fit! Its the white one, and like everyone else it doesn't even go in a little bit its so odd.
I started to file it down some, then guess what, I LOST it!
Coupled with the fact that ppl are having problems with this card anyway it seems its truly cursed.
FFING USE MOLEX HIS FFS! :mad:
