FPS Drop From 60 to 5-10

I have been having trouble recently with my fps during gameplay. What happens is during play I get an fps of about 60 for about 5-10 minutes and then suddenly the fps goes down to around 5-10, for around 30 seconds. I looked at cpu utilisation during the fps drop and it goes up quite a bit. It seems as if the cpu kind of takes of the gpu like the gpu 'runs out of breath'

If anyone has a ideas on how to solve this is would be much appreciated as it's starting to get quite annoying now.

What is your system specification? Does it happen in more than one game or is it game specific?

AMD Phenom II x4 955 3.2ghz @ 4.0ghz
M4A87TD/USB3
12GB of RAM
XFX 550w
500gb Seagate HDD

It did only happen in Battlefield Bad Company 2 but has started occurred in other games.
There's no overheating issues either.

Stress test the CPU, it may be overheating and throttling in the current weather temperatures. Whats the MAX temp after 20 mins?

I assume the GPU temps are also fine? Something like HWMonitor or GPU-Z will let you know.

What GPU driver version are you on?

320.49 drivers and yeah I was using HWMonitor.

Temps on CPU go no higher than 55c
Temps on GPU sit around 75c

I'm playing BFBC2 at the moment and it's just really strange. When the lag appears the CPU goes mad with it's utilization (100%) and then goes back down to 70% ish when the lag dies down. I hope that's a good enough description :)

You mention CPU utilisation goes up for the period where your FPS drops, if you run task manager in the background on the processes tab, is there enough time to flick to it and catch which process is using the most CPU during these periods?

Try some different GPU drivers? Theres 326.19 betas out at the moment, also maybe go back a few versions to when it wasn't happening to rule that out.

@Confused Stu - The lag goes on for about 10-15 seconds and is still there when I've tabbed back into the game.

@Speed - I'll try that today

@dreigns - Chrome usually runs in the background and I usually have Skype open too. Other than that I don't have any programs open.

Ok so I think this is the problem but I'm not too sure on how to solve it...

Why is it underclocking itself like this?

When I say it used to get hotter, I meant as in when I had the stock cooler. It wasn't overclocked when I did have the stock cooler but it still got hotter than it does now, now that it's overclocked.

If that makes sense...

Throttling like that is normal, it is an energy saving feature. The CPU will downclock when it is not being utilised much, as soon as more performance is needed, it will clock backup almost instantly.

If you use something like Prime 95 or LinX and keep CPU-Z open you'll see it suddenly go to the max speed, once you start the stress testing.
