Fragmentation of streaming services - can they survive

Not really sure if TV is my future entertainment.

I don't have a TV licence and don't miss it
I don't have anything except netflix for tv
Tried prime.. Honestly.. There was one TV show I watched. Couldn't find anything else. Cancelled after trial
D+. It's OK. But again was done after month trial.

I can't believe it.. But I'm near cancelling netflix. Not due to the cost.. Due to the content.
Probably got 2 more thinga I want to watch then I'm done (Dota and castlevania)

Don't think I'll be buying a 4k TV, don't watch TV enough mow. Running out of things to watch on screen. Few netflix series to come but don't need the year long netflix sub.

Sad times as netflix really is the only service that produces stuff I like.

:) It's a Rickyism.

Actually I think I made that one up but you get the gist.

Split it 50/50/50
Catch 23 situation
Burn the hatchet at both ends
Sold you under the bus

You get the drift, by the way if you have not seen Trailer Park Boys it's a must, aside from the last few series where Netflix took over wasn't as good.

:D I say toadaso, Bornt day and worst case Ontario all the time.

Agree on Netflix ruining it. Not sure when they got their hands on it but have recently watched it all back and it visibly slips off a cliff after the Snoop Dogs introduction. Only got halfway through the first series of the cartoon too.

No wonder Netflix prices are going up. They've reportedly spent $30M per episode on season 4 of Stranger Things. Mad.

Thisnis what happens when shows become too big

you try to save money by only signing the actors to a 1 season contract, then when it's success you sign them to another season but now you have to pay them more to not walk away and then this keeps repeating eventually you are paying your main actors a million dollars each rt episode this story has happened in many other shows such as Big Bang theory

Only reason I've kept Netflix for a while is I share it with a friend here in UK, cousin in Europe, and wife's family in Asia :D

£15.99 is just too much though so I've cancelled and will try to get the price down via VPN etc in 2 weeks when membership has expired.

Got Prime but whenever I have a look on there, can't find anything remotely interesting. Never tried the others such as Disney etc.

Disney + has really surprised me. They've got some great stuff on there. Just finished Dopesick and The Dropout, for example. Shows I wouldn't have known about other than people on here mentioning them, but very good TV.

To the people saying they scan through looking for shows to watch, my personal opinion would be that you're doing it wrong. I put a little effort into researching, use the 'TV shows I'm watching now' thread for ideas and construct a list on IMDb, then work my way through it. There's so much good TV out there these days, I've never got to the point of an empty list and just scanning through looking for something to catch my eye.

Netflix has too much of a presence already to fail, though who knows.

I don't believe they're too big to fail. They don't have what the other two major providers have - a very rich parent company, or a massive catalogue of content. Netflix has moved to try and produce it's own films/shows as it doesn't have to worry about the licensing costs etc, but some of those have really been naff.

Id say Disney and particularly Netflix are at biggest risk of failure

Netflix seems like it has to rely completely on its own content as others may well get bought or be on their own platform

Disney I think will need to make more series or simply buy more independents,.

Can Netflix survive on independents alone? I hope so, its what I like.but no idea what the majority like.

Oh ,i forgot about brit box.. Is anyone actually subscribed to that? Sounds like trash

Piracy is looking more and more appetising I have to say.

You forget that Disney own the rights to a massive number of films. They're also going through an updated remake of a number of their classics which are likely to be very popular.

Edit: just realised these were old posts.

Echoing what others have said, I think Disney will do fine due to the huge amount of content they own, and they have other revenue streams.

Prime belongs to one of the most wealthy companies in existence, so they're not short of cash. I see they've recently just paid for rights to show all 25 of the bond movies - that must have cost a pretty penny. Prime also allows you to legitimately share your account with someone else.

Netflix is just relying on the fact they were first to market to secure their future. Considering they cost significantly more than the other two I suspect could lead to their demise.

It’s funny reading the comments from 2019 about Disney+ and looking at it today.

They probably have more content than any other streaming service at this point and loads of new stuff being added each week.

I think one of the most under rated services is Apple TV+, it’s certainly a sub, binge, unsub service as the quantity is low but the quality is great.

Think the same.

Amazon and Disney are probably going to end up being the market dominators.
Amazon can afford to run at a loss. Disney can probably survive.

Neither are for me. Netflix sits on its own as my go to service. But not sure if it's sustainable.
Part of me wants to stay subscribed to netflix as long as it keeps making/buying shows I like.

Disney is a month subscription here and there. Amazon is a no no, I didn't l like the content and don't need the delivery service.

Hope netflix doesn't die off

Disney+ will just keep getting bigger and better, need to remember they own the entire 20th Century Fox back catalogue and have barely tapped into it in any real way as yet.

Netflix is getting more average by the day, just a sea of mediocre content with a few standout shows and movies.

I spent a fair amount of time last weekend on NF checking IMDB scores of a lot of new movies and majority is 4/10 or under, it's utterly laughable. They're the leader as they've been around so long, there will be a sharp shift in the coming years.

See I've gone the other way, I've not really found great content on Netflix for a while now.

Apple TV is exclusive to apple devices though aren't they? Which I can't see doing Apple TV any favours, but again they've got a wealthy parent company that could afford to run the service at a loss.

I think what we like is quite niche. No other big player hosts it. I was genuinely surprised I didn't want to watch a thing on amazon when I had the month trial.

It’s no longer exclusive to Apple devices. I use the Apple TV app on my LG TV.

This, you can get it in a wide range of devices now. As I said, it doesn’t have a huge amount of content but what it does have is all very good from what I have watched. It’s worth a sub every now and then certainly.

The situation is not sustainable for sure. Now it's become so crowded, consumers cannot be expected to pay subs for so many things. Companies can expect it, but people just can't afford it all.

Well I wouldn’t expect you to sub to them all at the same time. I’m not subbed to any at the moment. I’ll sub to something if there is something I want to watch but I’ll unsub once I’m done.

There is so much quality content out there at the moment, you don’t have a hope of watching a fraction of it in reality so why burden yourself with loads of streaming subs. Just swap between them.

It's getting pretty ridiculous - even within the free TV market (Freeview vs Youview vs Freesat vs Freesat from Sky) there is fragmentation within which channels are available.

What would be ideal imo would be an open platform that any content provider could use, but offer e.g. "channel" or "content" bundles within the same platform/app.
Want Sky Sports - just pay for that, want Netflix originals - pay for them, want BBC (or britbox etc) then pay for that.

I keep looking for a viable Sky Alternative, and legally there still isn't one. Having several different apps/subscriptions in order to cover all the content I would want, just isn't a user friendly way of doing things.
Plex now let’s you tie in to the various subscription services, so if you have Prime etc then you can browse all the various films, see one you like and (if it happens to be on prime) you can watch directly in Plex.

…but I agree. Having Netflix, Prime and Disney+ isnt user friendly as every app is wildly different and can be frustrating for children/wives/parents who may not be so technical.
