Freaking out!!!

I'm feeling something similar at the moment.

Went to the doctor last November with a persistent mild sore throat and was given antibiotics which didn't help. Went back a few weeks later and was told it was a virus but given something for an oral yeast infection, again this didn't help.

Over Christmas the problems got worse and I was having difficulty swallowing so I was straight back to my GP who diagnosed acid reflux and provided a month long course of pills. This made a small difference but the pills finished and I still got the problem.

Back to the GP today and he tells me that he doesn't know what it is but it's probably not cancer because I don't have the risk factors but just to be safe I need to have a chest x-ray with barium and see a specialist ENT. Obviously I can't get the c word out of my head and is going to be weeks before I know anything.

Hope yours turns out OK, it's a pretty nasty feeling knowing something is wrong but not knowing what.

This is the major problem I have with the way cancer is viewed by GP's. Cancer can strike anyone at any time so whether or not the GP feels they are categorised as being at risk or not is irrelevant. A persistent sore throat that did not respond to the first round of treatment should have been referred for further testing ASAP.

They should rule cancer out, then look at what else it could be particularly because the tests they can now do for cancer are often fairly easy. For example, did he even send you for any blood tests?

I dread to think how many people lose their lives because their GP is faffing about with anti-biotics and pain killers and dragging it out over months. But then I suppose the government have got a vested interest in killing off as many of us as they can so their pension hole does not looks so bad! /cynicsm

I know far too many people who have been badly let down over the years and it makes me really angry, sorry

Any developments, have you had your X-ray yet?

I'm in for my 'characterisation' operation on Tuesday. Getting a little anxious, but not as bad as I was.

My urinary issues seem to be clearing up, the new antibiotics I'm taking are definitely working, with very few symptoms remaining and even those are now very mild and occasional.

I'm trying not to think about it too much which is why I'm arguing a bit more than usual in GD as a distraction...;)

I had the x-ray but I won't find out the results until later this week. I'm fully expecting it to be negative for anything and the issue to rumble on even longer.

I was feeling much better earlier this week but it has come back with a vengeance today.

Good to hear the urinary issues have got better and good luck with the operation.

Is this just an exploratory procedure? Good luck. :)

The consultant found what he called a 'filling defect' on a CT Urogram, basically it's a smaller than 1cm area of my right renal pelvis where the dye didn't go but should have. He thinks it is a variant of a normal kidney, like a prominent papilla sticking out into the calyx. However they want to put a camera up inside my kidney under a general to further 'characterise' it and recheck my bladder and ureter after the suspected infection...he called it a 'ruling out' procedure to be 110% sure.

Every other test, from blood tests, urine cytology, cystoscopy, ultrasound all came back normal, the only anomaly was the CT scan...I am hoping he is correct and it's nothing to worry about, however I just seem to focusing on the worst possible outcomes and that it is a TCC cancer that the other tests didn't detect, which goes to prove you shouldn't self diagnose yourself online if you want peace of mind, because you won't find it.

Tomorrow afternoon is when I go in.

Good luck for tomorrow. I really don't think you have anything about and neither does a lurker on here who had a look at your thread and is in a very good position to determine that sort of assessment.

Thanks, I'm looking for all the positive vibes I can get. :)

I'm in at 12:30 tomorrow afternoon which has now just been confirmed. They told me to keep taking the antibiotics as normal and stop everything else.

Best of luck Castiel. I think it's natural to focus on worst case so you make it easier for yourself should it be true, there's a term for this but I forget it. Don't forget that Doctors will often talk worst case to prepare in advance but that's because it's dangerous for them to give false hope.
The fact all those other tests came back fine is great, you know most of you isn't broken at least! Bearing in mind what I said about them (doctors) it's very positive in my eyes that he said it's likely nothing to worry about.
Hopefully what will happen is you'll pop on tomorrow and apologise for making a thread that turned out to be absolutely nothing :D

A friend of the family had this happen to them. She complained for years and got brushed off to eventually be told its now terminal sorry.

I also got brushed off with "It'll be piles as Ulcerative Colitis is rare in your age group"

I had consulted Dr Google but I'm not stupid ALL my symptoms pointed towards UC. When you tell your Dr you can go to the loo 20-30 times a day and pass very small stools with blood or just blood. He should really investigate further. Eventually he took me serious when I almost went on the way into his office so had to dive into the loo, And then again 2 mins after I had sat down in his office.

He asked if that was a normal occurrence for me since this started so I explained 20 -30 times a day means 20-30 times a day

I hope so. I really do. :)

Same happened with a doctor close to me.

I really don't know why they wouldn't cover their own backs and do thorough tests on people who come back with the same complaints. It's almost like they've been told they can't refer everyone for tests as it would put a massive strain on the already strained NHS.

I haven't rxperienced that. I was refered straight away, everything has been pretty through this far. Poked and prodded, scanned and injected, and pretty much everything in between. All just in case, and I was told this is standard NHS procedure for anyone who presents with any kind of urinary bleeding, particularly men.

Blood in your stools should be refered straight away as well from what I've been told.

I've had to make an appointment with my GP again, after complaints about heart palpitations he only scheduled a blood pressure 24 hour test and blood tests. I rang 111 on the weekend and the doctor who called back told me my GP should have scheduled a 24 hour ECG. The constant waiting around is the worst thing about it all, 4 days to get in then god knows how long before I am referred to a cardiologist for the further tests. Being relatively young is probably working against me.
