My boss has just asked me to see if I can attempt to recover some files from a company laptop (old user left on bad terms, deleted his docs before handing it back) problem is, one of the regional managers wanted some files from it first (he also deleted his network backup)

Being a work computer, he's asked me to keep it legitimate and free if possible (tight firm). The good programmes are all quite expensive so can anyone recommend a free piece of software? I've had a google and make a few bookmarks but I know the ocuk community is far superior to my googley skills :)

EDIT

I've just noticed EaseUS has a free 2gb limit, I'll give that a try if no one has any better solutions?

Recuva is worth a shot.

Alternatively you can try: PhotoRec for linux. More complicated to use but better results when I've used it.

You'll be wanting to take the drive out of the laptop and plug it into another PC.

This is the vital first step.

This will prevent Windows from overwriting any files marked for deletion.

GetDataBackForNTFS is your best bet. It's cheap too.

You may have some joy with 'Recuva'

Many thanks guys, I gave Recuva portable a go and it has found all sorts dating back years! I've recovered thousands of documents to a portable HDD which will be handed over for management to search through as I don't know exactly what they are after.

I also discovered this ex employee is into cross dressing men, despite being married.

You really do learn something new everyday!
