Free Usenet

It’s time like this I wish Eclipse didn’t filter NTTP traffic. I only get 20KB/s max =(

Seriously?

I knew they capped usenet & P2P to <2Mbps during peak times & their free usenet was capped to 2x15KB/s, but I didn't realise it was that bad now :(

EDIT: Actually, while I’m at it, any NTTP friendly and gamer friendly ISP’s anyone wants to suggest?

Literally just migrated away from Zen, who together with IDnet are far and away the fastest and most reliable ISP's in the UK, but their bandwidth restrictions forced me to look elsewhere, Ive eventually gone with UKFSN who are not as fast but do offer far more Gigabyte per pound.

If bandwidth is not an issue then Zen or IDnet everytime in my opinion. Might not apply if you can get LLU services in your area however. I cannot so I could'nt judge.

Depends on how much you wanna pay.

[Sorry for the thread derail guys but this is semi related discussion]

Even with SSL encryption on the data, the best I’ve ever gotten is 20KB/s on NTTP traffic. P2P and Torrent traffic about 150KB/s off peak times in the dead hours of the morning (3am) and even then only on a very rare occasion.

Looks like I’m about to migrate to Zen. Currently looking at the Home 8000 pro or Office 8000 packages (sorry I know this is extremely newbish of me but what exactly is “Traffic Prioritisation”), I think realistically I’d have to draw the line at £60 a month. Unfortunately no LLU at this exchange never will be. Cheers for your help guys as always.

I believe traffic prioritisation is just a fancy term for 'if you've hammered your connection you'll have less priority over someone that has'nt'. To be honest in the 2 years I was on Zen never once did I feel like my connection was throttled and until I migrated I been continously connected to the exchange without drop-out for over 4 months.

Absolutely stunning ISP just wish they offered more bandwidth damn-it. Was'nt prepared to pay the £79.99 +vat for the unlimited 8meg line. They also offer an uncapped free usenet service from which I never failed to Max out my 8 meg line. (even while downing headers). Thats why the 50gb you have each is gone in a flash if you're not careful.

I did 38gb in a day and didnt realise till it was too late..

I wish I could justify £93 a month on net access but in equating >35Gb a day I’d have to start worrying about storage and it’s a slippery slope of getting over the top. Although I’m sure most of us could see a server rack full of data servers under the stairs if we won the lottery. ;)

Out of curiosity what "news client" do you find to be the best KurTz? Anyone for that matter?

I was thinking of moving from Zen to one of the Enta resellers for the bandwidth. When you say slower, what speeds do you get? Is that a MAX product. I'm on 2Mb legacy, worth migrating?

I currently get 4 to 5Mb connection with Aquiss. When he says slower their 2 622Mb centrals are at full capacity at the moment. The third should be here in time for Christmas. And they are discussing a 4th to go on pre order straight after. It should match what he was getting before.

For me however my internet speed increased. Sync went up 1mbit from Virgin.net. :D

I've just seen a post on the easynews [USA] support group stating the Dutch service easynews.nl has nothing to do with easynews.com

currently connected and raping it for all my 2mb line is worth good speed but im finding im having to use my isp (pipex about 40k a sec) server as a fill server seeing as im finding a lot of the posts were missing

If your not experienced with newsgroups "usenet" i suggest you read this. It tells you how to set the diffrent clients up too :).

Well there are a couple. I started out using Agent which is excellent but a git to use, then went to newsbin pro, which I still use 'ish' but to be honest out of them all I've found the simplest to be Grab-It. Costs about £1 a month to use so you wont even miss that and it does exactly what it says on the tin.

Also its got a nice search feature which means you dont have to download headers all the time..

Depends on how complicated you wanna get really.

Zen are introducing a 100gb cap to their 2mb line are'nt they?

Speed wise I've gone from 850kbps all day too maybe 800 - 750 off peak and 500 - 600 peak. Latencies have also gone up quite a bit. I was pinging a Jolt Unreal Tournament server at about 25ms, its now risen to about 50ms and thats not at busy times.

Maybe explained by the fact that a tracert to www.bbc.co.uk on Zen was 6 hops and is now between 9-10 hops depending on which DNS I assign. The connection is also not too stable currently but there is a new 622mbps pipe coming online in the next week so things should improve considerably. Also another 622mbps pipe coming online in March.

My exchange however is at Red status so it does need upgrading, BT planned to do it on the 2nd of december but I'm guessing that never happened as its still on red. Check the samknows website for that info.

what was the usenet client software let that will uncompress the rar's for you automatically once all files are downloaded?

i had this client ages ago, forgot the name :o
