Age 15 work experience, and Kazaa/Napster were still in fashion. I was working at Harwell laboratories building a website for the team I was working with. When I had informed a few of them about the programs to get (backups -_-) apps and music, one was keen for me to show him.

So I hopped on to his work PC and downloaded Kazaa, started browsing for the app he wanted and finally found it. Downloaded and installed, he is sat next to me watching my progress, when all of a sudden a full size image (popup) of a phallus just appeared on the screen and I could not for the life of me get it to go away, then the PC started freezing up... I am trying my hardest not to look the guy who was watching me in the face... eventually I just shut the PC down manually, turned it on and left him to it :-/

Not really sure if he got the app to work or removed the virus. I just got back to my own work and we didn't talk about :-/

I read it, that was funny.

I don't have any funny stories about AV really. Once though, I found that there was a bad update released for a program called Bullguard. It was only out 30 mins or so, and that was the exact time I'd decided to run a full virus scan on my laptop, just because I was being thorough and had the time. Turns out that it detected almost every important windows system file as a virus! Not only that, but before I had noticed, my gf had clicked quarantine. Upon finding that that didn't remove them, Bullguard suggested to delete the files - why not?!

This totally hosed the OS and I spent a few hours trying to fix it until I realised what had happened. Had to reinstall the whole OS. I hope webroot doesn't do that!

My gf and all of her friends are virtually pc illiterate, so when things go wrong I'm often called in to make things better as their nerdy friend. This particular time I was handed a vista laptop with the old vista antivirus 2009 virus on it. "Piece of cake" I thought as I sat down to remove it. It proved trickier than I had expected so I decided to manually regedit it out so I could get it to stop disabling the anti-malware app I was trying to install. 10 minutes later I had managed to completely destroy the OS beyond all recovery and handed it back to the hopeful friend with consoling words about it having an anti-tamper trigger that went off when I tried to disarm it. There was nothing anyone could've done. :p

An ex work mate, had a laptop for about a month. He brought it into work, and asked me to have a look at it.

I asked what anti virus software did he have. The look on his face was like a blank piece of A4. So I got his Nod32, installed and rand a virus scan.

Some time later it finished.

Total Viruses 222. I could not believe he had that many. He wouldnt tell me what sites he was browsing. lol

Well Nod took care of them all in the end.

Edit

Just thought of one from many years ago.

I got to be friends with someone from canada. They sent me a file (at this time in my computer like I had not clue about viruses) I clicked on it. A second later it started with a message on the screen "This is a virus and will delete all of your files".

Then file explorer opened up, and all the folders and files started to delete. Panic set in, crap what do I do, turn the pc off. Well all the folders and files deleted the screen went blank. Oh great (is milder than what I was thinking).

About 10 seconds later a message popped up. "Saying it was a joke and nothing was deleted".

From that day I have never opened a file that I didnt know who it was from.

Back in school i cant even remember what the PC's were probably Acorn ones but they were olddd and this isnt exactly a virus more of a prank we pulled on some guys but...

IT Lesson
We had a Man-U fan in the class and we sent him an attachment to open by email, pretending to be excited about the attachment and were like open it its awesome!!

(We did this to most of the guys or most had seen it already only this dude was left)

He opened the attachment and his computer froze, but on his screen there was a bright red background, and big green text flashing which read

'Im looking at Gay Porn!!! I love mens ass!!!'

This prank was amplififed two fold because

a. he pressed some keys and his computer wouldnt shut down, instead it kept beeping, coupled with the bright screen, everyone, i mean everyone, noticed
,
b. the lesson was about to start and in walks our teacher, with the deputy head and one of those people from some organisation that come in every so often to view teaching and stuff.

The poor lad had his face in his hands and broke down crying. He was also the only one that got told off for opening the attachment when in our rules we werent allowed to open or view personal emails!

Ahhh the good old days! About 11 year ago this was! Havent seen the lad since lol!

Two viruses back in the nineties - one was in my friend's PC, with an odd sense of humour - every now and then it would pop out the disk tray displaying a message on the screen: 'Would you like a tray for your tea?'. Annoyingly enough it froze up the system as it did that and was quite resistant to deleting (regular disk format only got us the following message: 'Want to get rid of me? Try harder'). Only got rid of the damn thing after a deep format =/.

The other one was at my mum's work place. Every day 5 pm on the spot all the infected machines played some odd music bit, then shut down in unison...Kind of annoying when you need your machine for tax calculations and stuff.

My last job, working in an IT department for a global call centre company.

One of the senior developers got an email, warning of a virus that was doing the rounds. It suggested you first fwd the email to everyone you know and then search for a specific file ..if found you have the virus and you should then delete it..

He did fwd it..(to most of the company) he then proceeded to delete the file and reboot the machine...it did not come back up..it was a hoax and the file was a essential system file...a quick email then went out to ignore the email..luckilly no one else was that stupid..

I was young and was downloading and uploading porn on a p2p program, my dad came in so I minimized the window and then avast blasted out my 5.1 you have a virus! and my dad knows a lot about computers so he sat down and with me going NO! urrm no no it's ok sweating and panicking its nothing he opens the window and laughs as he see's the porn being shared lol

Why also nobody is allowed on my pc! lol

I also need the key as I have kaspersky 3 key and I use that on my pc sisters and brothers laptops so my poor laptop has nothing :(

I take care of my Dad's laptop that he uses at work for streaming TV etc, anyways i got a phone call from my mother one evening saying that the laptop wouldnt work...it was starting then black screening then restarting etc.

I called round the next day, was just about to start the laptop up when my dad came walking past looking rather sheepish saying things like "dont worry about it, we will send it off to get fixed & someone must have got control of it while i was at work"

This started alarm bells ringing, anyways when i eventually got it started and logged in i set about trying to remove the offending maliciousness, then i noticed that the MSE Anti virus was turned off...i asked dad about this and he said he didnt have a clue why.

My mother kept popping her head in and asking how it was going and my dad was becoming increasingly annoyed with her, resulting in him shouting at her to leave the "MEN" in peace.

When she went upstairs my dad said in a very quiet voice "I might have been looking at a bit of pron while i was at work" ok i thought, he's a grown man he can do whatever he likes, at that point a load of images and text started showing up on the screen over and over again....put it this way, it was the type of stuff you might take a look at once but you wouldnt revisit, and you certainly dont want to believe that your dad's been looking at it.

So long story short, dad had been trying to look at filth but MSE kept stopping him, and was alerting him to pop ups and telling him the computer needed cleaning so he turned it off!

He needs something better than MSE so he can keep up his hunt for world class pron.

during my time at school i was sorta selling data disks during class granted the data was porn and the disk was cheap but ah well, over the course of a few months i got bored of making money from the very very easy perverts who we all know and love today as uni students butback then i decided to track down a virus and contain it. afterwards i burnt it to every single disk i sold and to no surprise they were confused, after about 2 days of saying some BS to keep them buying i flat out said "your computers are screwed, i dont know how it happened maybe you downloaded something illegal" of course they believed that so they asked how can they fix it so i sold them yet another disk this time was with norton on and said look instlal that and itll be ok. ofcourse norton back then was detecting everytihng not signed as some sort of virus/trojan/cookie and they did exactly as they were told after which i came out with the truth and said "delete system32" after which i took 2 months off on holiday abroad with my parents.

moral of this virus story, dont download porn illegally.....

most of that was true except i never sold anything for money.
