I've only really heard of the main hard drive manufacturers to be honest eg. seagate, hitachi, wd, maxtor etc. But is Freecom any good?

I'm looking to get an external drive for backup purposes, seen this one...

Freecom 500GB 7200 USB2.0 3.5" External Hard Disk Drive

for ~£100.

If it is not reliable then I don't really want to risk it at all, does anyone have one? Any problems with it?

I've never heard anything bad about them.

Some hard drive manufacturers make more faulty hard drives than others, but if you get a hard drive that isn't at all faulty then it should last for years and years unless you keep it under bad conditions or don't look after it.

We've got a Maxtor in another computer that's now over 10 years and still going strong!

Anyway, how about this?:

[EDIT]

I see the Freecom above is a 3.5"... were you after it because of the physical size?

I think its only the enclosure that is made by freecom and the actual drive inside will be one of the usual brands that you mentioned.

I had a freecom 250Gb external and the actual enclosure itself failed.

I opened it up and there was a WD Caviar 250Gb drive inside which is now working perfect in another enclosure :)

I think the above posters are right about the enclosure being freecom and drive itself probably being one of the usual brands.

I've had a freecom enclosure for about 18months now with no problems. However I've heard a number of reports about the power supply failing over time, I've been lucky but I suspect it's down to the occasional use mine recieves when I remember to backup my data ;)

But as they said for the price who cares if the power supply fails after a year? :p
