FreeNAS - THE MOST COOLEST *UNIX THING EVER

Just trying FreeNAS out for my first NAS and dive into Linux and struggling a bit!

It's installed all fine, full install so I can install packages. Got drives mounted and shared but installing packages just isn't happening!

I'm after sabnzbd and ps3mediaserver but at the moment neither of them work. I'm running FreeNAS 7.2 if it helps. Where's best to get the SAB and PSM files from as the instructions above for SAB give me an error on the SABnzbd.py command

I'm tempted to delete all packages and start again but ideally need a run through of working SAB and PSM on FreeNAS 7.2 if anyone can help!

I remember having to do some editing/modifying to get SABnzbd working properly.

This might help: http://forums.sabnzbd.org/index.php?topic=2067.0

Thanks, I'll have a play around with it today. There's so many threads and scripts which say it works but then you notice it's for a different version of the package or OS and that something must have changed on an update!

Managed to get it all up and running, except PSM but I needed to recreate an array from scratch.

I unmounted, then removed the aray and disks and started again. When I removed the disks from the array a message appeared saying

Warning: You are going to delete a RAID volume. All data will get lost and can not be recovered.

Which was fine, I clicked apply then I rebooted, but that warning message has stuck on the screen, even after creating a new array. Is that a bug or something wrong with the drives/array?

Even with the 2 drives from the array removed form the server the message is still on that page, just weird!

I found FreeNAS to restrictive in the end and have run arch for over a year on my server. It has broke though and I don't have the time to fix it, will probably nuke it and go back to debian.

What is the point of FreeNAS compared to normal linux? Surely normal linux would be more flexible?

It takes 2 minutes to get sharing working...

nano /etc/samba/smb.conf
service smb restart

done.

I agree it's not rocket science, but there's a bit more to it than that.

FreeNAS is great if you don't have the time or inclination to learn Linux, and want something (relatively) quick and easy to set up that (usually) just works out of the box. It also runs from a USB stick, so you can dedicate all your HDDs to entirely to data, and if you fancy dabbling with ZFS that's the icing on the cake.

Has anyone got PSM working within FreeNAS? I've got it installed and the PS3 can see the folders/files but nothing will play. I get either "corrupted data" or "this media is not supported".

I've setup a PSM.conf but not sure if it's correct as it's copied from the FreeNAS forum. The conf also sets the default media folder but the PS3 navigates from /root which makes me thing the PSM.conf isn't being loaded.

Any ideas?

edit:

Might have solved it myself, will have to wait until tonight to test though.

I'd created the conf file but not linked it - http://www.homemultimedianetwork.com/Guides/Installing-PS3-Media-Server-on-FreeNAS.php

Totally agree, i've been using it for a while. Just wondering you said you can stream to a PS3, do you know if you can stream to an xbox 360? Thanks.

You can :) Use PS Media Streamer doesn't just limit it to PS3 but 360 as well works I think. I ended up buying a PlayOn HD Mini as I couldn't get PSM to transcode HD mkv's and didn't have the patience to faff around with it.

All working perfect now using SickBeard, Couch Potato, SABnzbd and YAMJ.

I've been playing with FreeNAS tonight under Virtualbox to see if it's suitable to replace my single IDE disk Synology NAS. So far it looks great. How well will it run on a dual core atom system with 1gb or 2gb memory, in comparison to a modern consumer NAS? This seems ideal:

EDIT: Blast, I thinik it only has a 10/100 NIC :(

Just setup my new freenas server using bits from old computers, so far i'm really happy with it. I'm quite the noob when it comes to linux/unix, but i found freenas quite easy and basic to configure.

Only got a couple of 1tb drives in it at the moment, may have to buy some more
