Freeview with a twist!

£3 aerial booster?

Will have a look in town today if I go in.

Yeah I have a PC to connect the TV to, normally have it linked to my macbook for watching films etc but got a pc as well now so was going to connect it to that.

Ill have a look at slingbox though!

if there's an arial socket, you could just run a big long extension thing through to your bedroom/living room? It's annoying but works.

Also, if you're just using it for 360/Wii/PS2 and not getting TV then you don't need a TV licence.

Yes you do

If you own a TV even if you dont use it you still need to buy a licence

this is to back my claim up

I haven't got a TV. I watch telly on my laptop.

The law requires everyone, including students, to be covered by a licence if they use any device to receive television programmes as they're being shown on TV. This includes any TV set, DVD or video recorder, digital box, PC, laptop or mobile phone.

(If you use a digital box with a music system or another device that can only be used to produce sounds and can't display TV programmes, and you don't install or use any other TV receiving equipment, you don't need a TV Licence.)

Do I need a licence?

You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, set-top boxes, video or DVD recorders, computers or mobile phones to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV.

If you use a set-top box with a hi-fi system or another device that can only be used to produce sounds and can't display TV programmes, and you don't install or use any other TV receiving equipment, you don't need a TV Licence.

So even if you only watch dvds you will need a licence

You need a TV Licence if you have a TV, end of.
You need a TV Licence if you have a computer capable of receiving TV signal, ie has PCI freeview card, or antenna input.

Its not upto them to prove if you use a TV to watch terrestrial/freeview on, its upto you to convince them you don't.

Can you guys stop being ass hats and read the bloody FAQ/thread properly. It's already been posted here so I don't see what your excuse is other than ignorance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I only use a TV to watch videos/DVDs/as a monitor for my games console? Do I still need a licence?

You need to notify us in writing that this is the case and one of our Enforcement Officers may need to visit you to confirm that you do not need a licence.

Please write to us including your name, address and the reason you believe that you don't need a licence at:

Taken from here, the same place you've already been selectively ignoring.

I swear these licensing threads are always the same. Where's that guy who works for them? I'm pretty sure he shut everyone up last time!

/end rant

I even posted it earlier in the thread; where's the misunderstanding here

The law requires everyone, including students, to be covered by a licence if they use any device to receive television programmes as they're being shown on TV. This includes any TV set, DVD or video recorder, digital box, PC, laptop or mobile phone.

The mention of 'DVD or video recorder' is in reference to devices with tv tuners, so for example if you use the device to record TV, as it's being broadcast, to a tape or DVD, you need a licence. If you don't use the device to watch/record broadcast signals (and have taken reasonable steps to prove this), then you don't need a licence.

They do operate in very much a 'guilty until proven innocent' way, but if you have a television set used as a display for a games console/dvd player and you do not use the internal tuner, you do not need a TV licence.

Been watching digital-TV on my computer for about 5 years and have never bought a TV licence.
The first year they came knocking twice and both times I refused entry saying it was not convenient and that they should ring me before coming!
The second time they took my mobile number and sure enough they rang to arrange a visit. I simply removed the aerial lead from my computer and turned it off before they arrived.
The TV man inspected my computer and asked why I had a TV-Card in it when I didn't have a licence, I simply said that it came with the computer and I sure as hell was not going to invalidate my warranty by opening it up and removing it (utter tosh I built the rig:p)
He then asked if he could have my permission to turn on my PC, sure I said knock yourself out. 4-5 seconds later XP's logon screen and TV man asked if I could log in, errr no I'm afraid it's got personal information that I am not willing to show you.
He then started quoting laws too me and saying that he believed I was receiving TV signals without a licence and that they would be following this up!! Not heard a thing in nearly 4 years now

You need a TV Licence if you have a TV, end of.

It's not up them you to prove if you use a TV to watch terrestrial/freeview on, its upto you to convince them you don't.
WRONG. You do not need a tv licence for owning a television or computer with a tv card.

It is up to TV Licensing to prove that you watch television programs as they are being broadcast. They like to give the impression that it is the other way round and gullible, credulous people believe them.

they interveiw you on your door step then take you to court they fine you the cost of the licene and court costs

and once 2nd time i slamed door in there face :-)
They can only take you to court if:

1) You open your front door to them

2) You believe that they have a legal right to "interview you"

3) You co-operate with them and give them a signed confession

So many people believe the empty threats, lies, spin and bluster put out by tv licensing.

The tv licence cannot be "enforced" and it is a voluntary tax.

Only the inadequate or the inadequately prepared are ever "caught" by tv licensing.
