Hi all,

If someone on Sky broadband (i presume ADSL?) wants to upgrade their supplied wireless router how would they best do it? Do they need to purchase through sky?

Will they need the user and pass name only if their current modem is built into router? If it is separate can they just get a normal router?

Thanks,

do a google for gettng sky passwords and log ins, once you have that any adsl modem/router will do, don't see the point myself their supplied kit does the job

Most ADSL modem/routers are compatible with Sky's services - just ensure that it is ADSL2/2+ enabled.

You will need your Sky ADSL/broadband username and password, this should be contained with your welcome information or accessible on your online account.

If you go for a leading ADSL router manufacturer like Netgear, the wizard should automatically detect any additional ADSL settings - again, you can confirm this via customer service or via the Sky knowledge base on their website.

All the best,
Ryan

Many thanks for replies.

So they will need an ADSL2+ (not just adsl?) router and their user/pass should be in their welcome pack or visible on their online one?
What is a good (decent range) model router to get?

Hi Ryan.

sorry to correct you but the information is wrong.

Sky do not issue username and passwords for a users account. A sky router has a unique password which is generated using the serial and mac code from the bottom of the router.

Using the above link will generate the username and password for the router so you can use this on on any other ADSL2 router to access skys network.

It was only up until a few weeks ago i realised you dont actually have username and passwords for sky accounts. Bascially sky have designed there network so that as long as the ISP on the line is sky and you use a pre configured username and password from one of skys routers it will work.

I have 3 sky routers at home that sky dont even know i have. each one generates a different username and password when using the above link all sync and work prefectly on my sky line.

Thank you for the correction enigma, seems Sky's policies have changed since I last handled them.

Interesting authentication they're using; presuming this only applies to their LLU products. Their Sky Access products (using BTs wholesale services) must still use a traditional method of auth.

Many thanks for replies.

In order to ensure your compatibility with the Sky service now and in the future (with exchange upgrades and such) you will definitely need a ADSL2/2+ enabled modem router to meet the latest standards. I stand corrected on the username and password front, please see Enigma27's reply.

Any of these models will be suitable and use the latest N Wireless standard for maximum range:

- Buffalo Wireless-N150
- Netgear DGN2000
- Linksys by Cisco WAG120N

Sure other OCUK members will have suggestions also

be aware though they will not help you at all if you have issues with their service and are not using their router

Definitely be aware of this, we've had a couple of customers experience this issue with other providers. Refusing support due to the customer using their own router instead of the one originally supplied.

Hi enigma,

I'm having terrible wireless signal problems so finally went to a DGND3300 N rated router but have no idea how to connect.
I'm currently with sky, they've sent me the new sagem but this didn't work either.

So my quick question relating to orig post... I have my username & paasword but where do I go from here?
Where do I enter this info (noob alert)

Many thanks in advance
