Fringe is utter carp?

I gave up on this after the first 7/8 episodes, then after S2 started a friend really hassled me to start watching again, so I did from the beginning and now it's in my top 10 shows ever.

If anyone cares, X-Files, Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galactica are also in my top 10.

Full top 10?

Kind of pointless mentioning your top 10 as if it matters, and then only list 4 shows.

Well I really wanted to like it. I honestly did. After many internet & friend recommendations. But I just hate it.

Reasons:

- Cheesefest.
- All mysteries solved by ridiculous BS "science".
- Pacey. :/
- OMG it's traced back to Massive Dynamics! Didn't see that one coming. *yawn*
- Crap acting.
- Crap special effects.
- The crazy old man isn't funny or endearing. He's just tedious.
- Lack of hot chicks. The main char is too manly.
- It's basically a re-hash of X-files.

etc etc.

Just me, or anyone feel the same?

No is just you;)
Great series walter is great character but who could argue with more chicks

1) It's not cheesy at all and has a good mix of comedy and more serious bits in later seasons (Olivia's childhood etc.)

2) Would you prefer that stuff just happened and was never properly explained? if so, check out Lost - you should love it. Loads of mysteries and about 75% of them never get explained.

3) If you can't watch Joshua Jackson and appreciate how much better his performance is in this then I'm sorry you're so blinkered. It's not like any other actors have been in bad stuff before they were in good films (Keanu in Chain Reaction before The Matrix, Tom Cruise in Cocktail before The Firm...).

4) If you bothered with later seasons it's a bit more complex than that.

5) I'd love to know what shows you rate in terms of acting... Fringe is a tongue in cheek sci-fi series - were you expecting it to be The West Wing or Oz?

6) It's a TV show, not a Hollywood movie. The effects have never ruined my suspension of disbelief, but then I don't have an axe to grind.

7) <shrugs>

8) I'd suggest porn over a sci-fi season for boobs.

9) If by that you mean it's a sci-fi show about mysteries being investigated you're right, but the 'monster of the week' style gets phased out with S2.

You obviously hate the show and just wanted to cause some controversy but your reasoning is pretty weak. If you don't like the show good for you.

For other people on the fence, it is definitely worth persevering - the story arc becomes a lot more interesting in S2 and the characters get a lot more fleshed out. It's one of my favourite TV shows at the minute along with Mad Men and House.

Fringe is pretty much the best thing on TV, Breaking bad excepted, now that Dexter has gone downhill.

Yes it is cheesy - very cheesy. But anyway, why should I bother sticking with it to later seasons if I don't enjoy the first?

2) Would you prefer that stuff just happened and was never properly explained?
What made you think I don't like things explained? I just don't like them 'explained' with utter rubbish.

3) If you can't watch Joshua Jackson and appreciate how much better his performance is in this then I'm sorry you're so blinkered.
Actually I never mentioned his acting (specifically). I did however mention his facial resemblence to an armpit.

4) If you bothered with later seasons it's a bit more complex than that.
As I already mentioned, why should I endure a series if I don't like it's first. I've given it a chance by watching 6-7 episodes. And that is a generous chance.

5) I'd love to know what shows you rate in terms of acting... Fringe is a tongue in cheek sci-fi series - were you expecting it to be The West Wing or Oz?
Since you asked... Firefly, Lost, Sons of Anarchy, Yes OZ, and actually many many many others. There is no excuse for poor acting in a show of this budget. Heck, even Dollhouse had better acting.

6) It's a TV show, not a Hollywood movie. The effects have never ruined my suspension of disbelief
Fair enough. I agree they are not necessary, but they help - especially when there isn't much else to save it.

Think you missed my point, but as above, it's more that if there's nothing else to go on, then it should at least have some decent eye-candy.

9) If by that you mean it's a sci-fi show about mysteries being investigated you're right, but the 'monster of the week' style gets phased out with S2.
Sure it does. But I'm not getting any reason from S1 to bother sticking with it that far.

If you think it's cheesy there's not much I can say to convince you otherwise. Compared to the likes of the cheese sandwich that is Blue Bloods this isn't even in the same neighbourhood.

I find John Noble's acting excellent (particularly the more emotional scenes where he's tearing up or cracking up mentally). I'd have figured you'd have liked Kirk Acevedo as well - he certainly proved his chops on Oz. Personally I don't rate Firefly at all, but didn't start a thread slating it because I know a lot of people do, and it's just not for me.

What I'm saying is your criticisms of the focus of the show change over time - so if you aren't prepared to try the later episodes that do provide what you're after I can't really help you.

I found season 1 hard going, struggled through to season 2 which turned out to be immense, its nothing without Walter though.Season 3 was also a good watch, and a good end to the season, makes me wonder where they will go after that ending..

I found it very 'meh'

Me and the missus saw it advertised and tried to get into it but it just didn't appeal. Probably because we don't watch a lot of tv and when we do we only watch (what we define) as brilliant tv whereas I just found Fringe average, not really any good but not that bad.

For the record I would normally watch House, Battlestar, Wire, Shield, Dexter, Game of Thrones and for maximum cheese and easy watching... Hawaii 5-o :D

I was mentioning the other kind of sci-fi I like as a direct genre comparison...didn't see the point in comparing it to Oz ;)

All shows in my top 10 in no real order...

Fringe
Babylon 5
Battlestar Galactica
X-Files
Sons Of Anarchy
The Shield
The Wire
Oz
Boardwalk Empire
Lost

Dexter also floats in and out of my top 10 dependant on the season.

Simple answer...look at Babylon 5...the first season was ropey as hell but the later seasons are considered to be some of the best sci-fi ever shown on TV.

I beg to differ as, fortunately, we all don't like the same things.

But as for the main char being manly? Then I must be gay for that "manly" type :p

Just finished watching S1 - it didn't quite grab me in the same way as Lost/Prison Break/Firefly did when I first watched them. But it built nicely through the series and I'm pleased to hear that S2 is meant to get even better.

Will back out of the thread now before I read anything I don't want to see.

Sorry OP, I love it and I think Walter is by far the best character, his eccentricity is played really well, not a huge fan of Jackson but I can live with it for the rest.

I think the stand alone episodes of Fringe suffer, there really is no classic non myth arc episodes that really stand out compared to say the X-Files.

I did struggle through season 1 but am enjoying season 2 a lot more mainly because of the over running story.

Didn't like it when it first came out. Gave it another chance a year later and loved it. I think I watched most of the episodes one after the other which helped.
