From 60MPH to 40MPH; Gov Proposals

Perhaps issuing guides to the general public on how to drop down a gear, full throttle and move the steering wheel at the same time would help.

It's all down to driving ability and road manners this is what we need! We should stop thinking of 60mph or 40mph and think NSL road, what is my judgement based on what I can or cannot see. The problem is people think that they should always be hitting the limit and not looking and judging the conditions. NSL roads come in two flavours, the busy well looked after main roads where perhaps you have good sight lines, pedestrians and cyclists are catered for off the carriageway and speed can be safe. Then there the everything that is not in a town, village or off the beaten track, where absolutely anything goes so you need to trust your eyes and make good judgement calls all the time as to what speed is safe.

The other side to driving is road courtesy, if I have made my judgement and am cruising along regardless of speed and a car comes up behind and is unable to pass due to road conditions then I look for somewhere safe to pull in and let them pass. No one else seems to :( it is especially frustrating when a lorry or tractor does decide to move across but then the next person in the queue sets off at not very much faster!

Another problem is people who simply will not overtake a tractor or something regardless of how many miles of empty, straight road is in front of them. This isn't so bad if you are second behind the tractor and can go around both of them but when you have 4-5 people who will not overtake its mindblowingly annoying.

I think if there was one speed limit for motorcycles and one for all other vehicles, the problem would be some way to being solved.
Let's be honest here - how many motorcyclists drive at anywhere remotely near the speed limit? My experience would suggest it's an even lower rate than car drivers.

You probably only remember the idiots as they're far more memorable than someone doing the speed limit. I suspect it's going to be about the same between bikes and cars.

Remember its a speed "Limit" not a target.. ;)

While i am not advocating 15 in a 60, people need to learn patience for people that may not be as confident driving as they are and not intimidate them into a potentialy dangerous situation.

If you were doing 40 in a 60 during your driving test, would you get a minor?

if the road is empty probably just a minor, if you're holding up traffic behind you you will fail. that's what my instructor always told me :)

he said do at least ~50 in 60 zone and you'll be fine.

I would imagine this would poo for a loaded artic....not being able to get a good run at a steep hill...he will bring all the traffic to 20mph behind him....lol

I agree the deaths are due more to lack of awareness than speed.

Why don't the government deal with the issue that their own statistics show causes the most KSI injuries on our roads - inattention? Too hard to police?!

Speed is too easy to measure and only accounts for 6% of KSI injuries and that includes 'too fast for the conditions' (not necessarily over the posted limit), rather than 'exceeding the arbitrary number posted at the side of the road'.

Actually, I am more surprised to see a motorcyclist driving at the speed limit and not cutting up everything in sight than those speeding and taking extraordinary risks.

I doubt it, as I don't consider someone driving fast an idiot - just making progress. I rarely encounter bikes that are doing anything other than about 50% above the limit to be honest, except on motorways.

Well, yeah, being as it's basically impossible to police. If you can design me an "Inattention camera", I'd like to see it.

I'm fairly sure it's possible, but the civil liberties lot would cry a lot as it would involve putting a camera in the car looking at the driver's face all the time.
