I've started using "does that make sense?" as a way of closing after explaining something, as I've heard others using it effectively. It's slightly rhetorical in that depending on the audience, some people don't like confrontation so won't want to say "no, that doesn't make sense." It's essentially a closed question. So it can sometimes help to gain passive agreement for things, i.e. if you make a proposal and it isn't challenged, then people are less likely to challenge it in future.I catch myself saying "if that makes sense" far too often - I don't know whether I say it because I believe my explanations to be crap, or I assume people are dense.
Can't we all just use <emphasis> instead of all these variations
