Front Fog Lights

Even better are the tards who think fogs give them better visability on country lanes even though you get an extra 2 metres of light and at 60mph anything additional they allow you to see you will crash into anyway..

It does help! ;)

It helps you see the sides of the road clearer so you can judge apexes better , having them on when cornering helps a lot. I do that sometimes when going down lanes or on my way home late at night on a spirited drive. I turn them off as soon as i see someone or go onto a road with streetlights.

It annoys me when see people going around when it's busy with fog lights on. I saw someone yesterday with there parking/side lights on and front fogs in the middle of a queue. WTF?

People who use rear fogs when there is no fog or little fog do my head in also, they are too bright. Mazda MX5 rear fogs should be banned!

How can it! Can you react in 2 tenths of a second?

What do you mean by that?

If i see a corner coming i can get the apex or see the corner better by seeing how close i am to the hedgerows.

L0rdmike, i was always under the impression they were so that other drivers can see you rather than helping yourself see the road better. Probably wrong.

I am more annoyed at the moment at people who seem to think they don't need to use lights at all despite it being dark or think side lights are enough.

OR

People who have foglights yet don't use them when its actually foggy?!

I use my sidelights when it is sunrise/sunset. They are there so people can see ME coming/going. I can see perfectly fine without main beam at this time of day, in fact I find main beam offers no extra visibility at all, it only helps to dazzle oncoming drivers which is unnecessary.

I thought it was illegal to use sidelights whilst driving? Aren't they meant to be used only when parked facing against traffic? (probably wrong there...)

I've only had to use fog lights a few times - both front and back when leaving our shop throughout last winter with proper bad fog, in most cases the fronts did actually help me see a bit as they aimed under the thickest parts of the fog on most roads.

Love the expression of seeing people (read: chavs) getting miffed when I flash my foglights and full beam them at 2 in the afternoon FFS!

Sidelights are meant to be used at "lighting up time", or, when you are parked and it's foggy.

Eh!

Sidelights are just the small front lights next to the headlamps and the rear brake lights in dim mode 9when you hit the brakes they fully light up). Can be used at any time of the day not just when parking.

yep, a quick google appears that driving with just sidelights is illegal in the UK, I never knew that!

no, you're wrong, i'm right :p

113-116: Lighting requirements
113

You MUST

* ensure all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit between sunset and sunrise
* use headlights at night, except on a road which has lit street lighting. These roads are generally restricted to a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) unless otherwise specified
* use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226)

Night (the hours of darkness) is defined as the period between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise).

[Laws RVLR regs 3, 24, & 25, (In Scotland - RTRA 1984 sect 82 (as amended by NRSWA, para 59 of sched 8))]

Do you mean after sunset or any time of the day?

Hmm, I'm unsure now. Of course, after sunset I would expect it to be illegal as driving just sidelights would be daft. I just use them around dawn/dusk to make my car stand out more (this is because I assume every other driver on the road to be a moron who will drive into the back of me though :D )

EDIT: Mjt seems to have cleared that up now :p

As anyone else found front fogs to next to no help in foggy conditions?

Yep, last winter I was out in some of the worst fog i've ever seen, extremely poor visibility, < 10m I guess. Front fogs were ok, but the rear fog can only be used in conjunction with the dip beam. Dip beam and fogs were too much, just lit up the fog, visibility even worse. Useless :/ I hope I never have to drive in fog that dense again, genuinely scary driving along at snail pace not even being able to see the road in front of you!

Why dont your headlights show hedgerows? Mine do?

Yeah but mine don't light up the hedgerow until about 1 to 2 meters in front of my car. The fog lights fill up the rest.

It's either me dip my head lights with the adjustable angle control and not see in front as well or use the fogs.

I meant when its dark dark (ie night time).

I tend to have my cars light set to auto most of the time (unless I need to use the fogs then I have to manually switch them on). This means dipped beam (well as dipped as self levelling xenons get) as soon as the sensor deems it dark enough to warrant them.

I never use sidelights when driving as I don't see the point of them.

It's horrible isn't it? I have driven in fog where I was literaly struggling to see much further than the end of the bonnet, and the reflected light from dipped beams just makes it worse.

Not long after I passed my test I drove to Bath in heavy fog on the A303. Driving slowly around one of the dual carriageway roundabouts, the fog went from dense to ohmygodicantseeanything and suddenly a car loomed out of the fog right on the exit of the roundabout. Swerved to avoid it, and suddenly fog lifted a bit. Turns out it was a broken down Golf with thick oil smoke pouring out of the exhaust. Not a great time/place to breakdown really.
