I keep getting this bobbing around and poor feeling/handling but im not sure if its front forks or rear shock:(

no matter what adjustments I make I cant seem to get any improvement

rear shock makes this graunching sound when I get off it and the weight is lifted

would a knackered rear shock also cause the front end to bob up n down like that? havn't long renewed the oil in the forks either but its hard to pinpoint

could be the needle roller bearing in the linkage or the ends of the shock that are graunching.
you get bobbing from front n rear not working together.
hold the bike by the headstock with one hand and the other on the part of seat were you sit. push down, the front n back of the bike should go down and back up together if there in balance. if they don't you will get bobbing over bumps etc as there not working together.
if the forks and shock are ok, you need to reset them to factory stock setting and go from there.
if you cant feel any difference when you turn the adjusters it sounds like the shock is fubared

Yes because the back end would dip & be bobbing up & down lifting the front taking weight off it, That's my take anyways.
If you are that lost though you could always pay to have your bike/suspension set up for you.

I cant afford to pay someone to set it up though

@shaken were the bearings hard to press out of the knuckle? think mine's due an overhaul, might pickup an 07 or 09 shock i think they bolt straight on to the 98 models with a spacer at the top

They might bolt on, but do they have the same spring and damper rate, or at least a suitable one? Spring rates can vary massively between different year models of the same bikes (due to change in the linkage).

I have no idea tbh,ive just read on forums what folks have done

works out cheaper than a proper aftermarket shock for the bike,i think the shock mount/prongs at the bottom is 1mm narrower but I could file that out

can see an 09 shock with just 1 miles use on ebay for £120 tempted but also seen them under £50

@CaNsA yeah I know about the sag,ive got an abba stand so could measure it,handling isn't to bad but it just bobs about and I think the rear shock or bearings have gone

When I did my rear linkage it wasn't too hard to get them out, wasn't cheap to replace everything though, £124 for 6 seals/4 needle roller bearings and 3 pins

mine were all genuine
couldn't get all of them in pattern.
the middle bearing and sleeve were toast, the other 2 were warn but maybe still useable.
does yours have grease nipples also?
mine did but whoever had it before never bother to use them, I give them a shot of grease once a month or so, so I should get a lot more life out of these.
the old ones with what looked like no maintenance lasted about 37k.

no I wish they did have grease nipples, dont think they added them till the j series 99 onwards not sure

58300 miles so I bet they are scrap by now

oh god!! hope mine aint that bad, today I heard a loudish knock sound coming from the shock area aswell:eek:

been looking and I think an 08 zzr600 shock bolts straight on so might try that as it will be newer (ill shove new bearings/sleeves in the knuckle though)

mines getting real bad now, every bump it graunches, handling is terrible, just aint had time to get it on the stand and check the linkage, pretty sure the bearing are shot

seems to be failing on all the bearings last 8 months, head bearings/rear wheel and sprocket carrier bearings now this

shaken, you know when you replaced your shock bearings, how many come in the kit? just one set where the shock pivots on or does it come with ones for the other two mounting holes?

you have three holes altogether, gonna order some soon

mine wasn't a kit, there were all separate from kawasaki.
for my linkage it was 6 seals 3 pins and 4 roller bearings.
message the guy, I would think though it will be a kit for just 1 mounting hole and not all 3.
don't just buy 3 kits though as all 3 were different on mine.
I use this site as a great reference to see what I need, you don't have to buy it from them, but sometimes its cheaper for the genuine part than the pattern part on ebay

yh ive messaged him,it says kit but all I see is enough to do where the shock pivots

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kawasaki-...pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item2324529bff

luckily I live near cradley Kawasaki but their prices will be a shocker
yeah, as I said ^^^there it cost me £124 for all mine, but as I couldn't see anything else on ebay , like you I seen those kits but wasn't sure of the quality, I went for the real deal and as mine has grease nipples they should last 60k+ if the ones that wasn't looked after lasted 37-38k.
until you take it off, you don't know which one or are all gone, it maybe just the centre one thats gone, so that one of ebay is a cheap fix
