Front LED lights on newer Audi's

Im not sure if its more a factor of Audi drivers usually being dreadful drivers, or if these new LED lights are now the problem, but the number of Audi's I encounter on the motorway in dust/dark conditons with what appears to be no lights on from behind - as I pass, arghhh those silly LED lights.

It would appear to be a counter measure to safety - because they've always got LED lights on they dont seem to think that pitch-black night conditions warrent dipped beems.

I liked them on the R8... but now everyone and their mother has them they have lost their appeal to me :(

Seeing them a lot on VW vans too

Saw one of those Jap granny boxes sporting some aftermarket Audi style running lights. You know, the ones taller than they are wide with 600cc engines or the like. I almost crashed laughing when I realised they had run wides over the bonnet for the privaledge and the driver couldn't have been much under or over 60.

I have to admit they do work better than sidelights alone, but they could be done a lot nicer IMO. I'm a big believer in being seen after riding a motorbike for a couple of years and I always have my sidelights on at least out of habit.

The next trend will be driving round town with full beams on aongside your fog lights... oh wait..

People have been driving and observing other road users for 80 odd years without the use of day running lights.

And they've been crashing like idiots because they never saw other vehicles for all that time as well. I gather that there is fair evidence that the lights improve safety.

Mine (2008 A3 Sport) are on the same switch as the main headlights, its just an extra turn. I do tend to leave them on just for visibility purposes more than anything else. Having a bright red car seemingly still makes you invisible to some people so anything that helps is a plus. :D

They have to have them as Audi needed something to copy BMW angel eyes.

A) They look better than the BMW angel eyes, B) like BMW or anyone else in the car industry have never copied features from competitors before.

Back on topic - I personally think that they're a reasonable safety feature and as said, DRLs will become law in the not-too-distant future, so stupid or not they are here to stay. If nothing else it partially sorts out the morons that refuse to put their headlights on in dusky conditions or driving rain.

VAG-COM switches them off anyway but good luck getting a dealer to do it.

volvos are made in a country where in winter the sun only comes up for a few hours, and even then its only dawn/dusk, not full sun up in the sky stuff... so makes sense really. not retarded at all.

My old man always told me when I was a kid that it was the law in Sweden to have your lights on 24/7 which is why their cars came with the feature. Don't know how true that is though. I was on holiday in Lithuania over the summer and you had to drive with the lights on all the time also. Got pulled a couple of times for forgetting.

No they don't. Clarkson summed it up well, they look like a council house at Christmas.

Please forgive me for disregarding Jeremy Clarkson's take on anything style-related!

True, same in Italy.

On the new Audis BMWs etc can you actually turn the new style LEDs off?

Wouldn't being able to turn them off defeat the whole purpose of them? Can you turn the side running lights off in Volvos?

Yes DRL's can be turned off by a switch on both Audis and BMWs. Volvos never used to have the option of turning the lights off but later ones there is normally a way of doing it.
