froyo for desire starts this weekend

Goldcard - is a necessity when flashing a RUU (ROM update utility) on a branded phone. Without it, you wouldn't be able to flash anything.

Rooting - you enable superuser access to the phone.

So they're not the same thing, so nothing is "better". Root access is given when a HBOOT (technically a phone bios) has a weakness that allows someone to grant root access.

Usually a RUU is flashed in order to get a suitable version of HBOOT that has a known vulnerability to root.

HBOOT 0.75, 0.80 can allow a phone to be rooted. There is 0.83 and 0.92, I know 0.92 can't be rooted, not sure about 0.83 though.

Hi all, just to let you all know that the OTA 2.2 update is back live by the looks as I just did a manual check after viewing the XDA forums and there it available for download and I have install it and all seem OK. Go get it people...lol.

Installing as I type this, first time got an upgrade error message due to low phone memory(had like 14mb, said to reserve at least 25mb). so i've removed several apps and started the install again.

All i can find for T-mobile is september.
And maybe longer for my network..:(
“Although the HTC Desire update was released for unlocked phones last week, HTC are building a specific version for Three which will take them a few weeks. Once we have this version it will be tested, approved by Google and then rolled out to customers. Although it goes without saying that we will get the update to customers ASAP, it’s likely to be towards the end of summer until we can guarantee a problem free version for our customers”

anyone used flash much ? ie for games ? is it as good as it looked in the promo vids ages ago ?

I had a bit of a play on a flash game(involved poping balloons with darts) this morning, played quite well. haven't tried iplay as it wants wifi(I'm on o2 not 3 or vodafone so no iplayer over 3g), tried the gadget show episode on fivefwd tho which played fine.

I tried the wifi hotspot but for some reason my ipod touch doesn't see it, set a ssid, wpa passcod, put the power mode to always on and left the channel to auto. not tried my laptop yet tho.

rimsy you need to downgrade your hboot to root the phone, there are how-to guides on modaco and xda-forums.

Got my OTA update yesterday, so far so good, seems smoother in general, iplayer works well, browser seems quicker and I think HTC have turned down the volume on the startup noise. Only problem I have had is swype sometimes does not function correctly all the time.

Will it be possible to root my phone in the future if I have update to FroYo OTA or will I be stuck? It would be nice to install 3.0 manually if HTC decide not to update again.

Yea, got it about a month ago,

I wonder if they're staggering the roll out? Apart from that the only thing I can think of is that the last update (1.21.405.2) was done manually from a zip file rather than OTA from here-

http://blog.gamermatrix.co.uk/?p=194

which may have allowed it to update to 2.2 before the Orange roll out. Unless others on Orange already have 2.2?

Maybe force 1.21.405.2 on yours again from the zip file from that site and see if it finds 2.2 OTA after.
