FTL - Faster than Light, Space Rogue - ( INDIE )

It is a shame.

I too would probably buy FTL2 if it ever appeared. It is amazing how so few people managed to make such an addictive game.

It cost me £1.79 in the recent steam sale, and at 87 hours played so far, it is probably the most cost effective thing I have ever bought. :)

Been playing for the past couple of nights after not touching it for a few months. Won last night for the 2nd time.

And then won just now!! Although it was a close run thing as you can see from the image :)

one day I'll complete it on normal....

I've had this for years and still never beaten it on normal. I always think I'm doing well then something comes and kicks my ass.

Congrats - amazing to win by such a fine margin :D

Some tips: Need way more engines. Like loads more, especially with the Osprey (best tactic: turtle and rely on the special weapon). You'll find the final boss so much easier if you can dodge an extra 1 in 3 shots. I never upgrade cockpit or sensors - doors occasionally, but only by one level (station someone in there to get an extra level).

Glaive beam is a tough weapon to beat the game with (on Normal). It's amazing, and I would never not try to utilise it if it came into my possession, but I've not figured out how best to use it.

Was playing with the Osprey myself at the weekend. Got some nice options at the stores and going into the final 2 zones I had cloaking, weapon preigniter, mk2 burst laser and 2 more beam weapons on top of the built in one, plus an ion blast. Had well upgraded shields and engines, plus hacking. Was ripping apart every ship I found, feeling confident I fight the final boss. First round, took him apart in ~20 seconds...
Then onto the second fight... Launched hacking thing towards shields, and whilst his shields dropped he fired a volley at me which offlined nearly all my guns and shields, starting a few fires... I was then dead maybe 30 seconds later. God this game is frustrating sometimes! I can't even beat it consistently on easy even after approaching 100 hours gametime!

Gah. I've had a few goes at normal but I'm getting clobbered. I got lucky with a run in the kestrel picking up the glaive beam early on and then a second burst laser II. I was partway through sector 7 and had just got a teleporter. I sent two guys through to muck about then had to get an engi to fix the teleporter as it got shot up. He fixed it just as my guys were about to cop it so I hit the button to pull them back and... wait, wtf, they're not back? And now my engi is over there? I'd hit the wrong button. Lost three guys in one stupid move and didn't recover. Laaaaame.

Woohoo, just won on normal with the osprey. I didn't get many good weapons, but I managed. I finished with the original burst laser 2, a burst laser 1, and two ion blasts which helped with weakening shields. I finished with two combat drones which I didn't use as I didn't have the power for them and all the shields and engines. I should have picked up a teleporter instead - would have made taking out the weapons on the flagship easier.

Get in!!! It's taken me 25 hours of gameplay to finally beat it on normal. I had a bit of a lucky run and got some good weapons early on. I thought I was gone in the second phase of the flag ship but managed to get repaired ready for the third and battered it. :D

I got within one bar of winning (on easy) with the red tail last night. The 4 basic lasers are amazing in the early game as each volley charges quickly and can do a lot of damage if the enemy only has one or two shields.

I finished the game with literally everything (bar weapons) maxed out and with a teleporter, so I've no excuse for losing. Weapon wise I had a hull laser, hull laser 2, burst laser 2 and a small bomb. We were each on one health, everything on my ship was on fire, including my shields and teleporter. The flagship recharged its zoltan shield, which I didn't think it could do mid battle, and that was that. The volley that should have killed it instead just hit the shields and then they got a power surge that destroyed me as my shields weren't even up. Boo!

How was your power distributed?

On easy I never go above 3 shields and 40% dodge and I have defeated the flagship many times.

I actually had one of my best victories a few days ago. I managed to acquire a glaive beam, burst laser 3, a combat 2 drone and a weapon pre-ignitor. I think I lost 1 bar of hull for all three encounters :)

On that game my power was distributed nowhere as everything was on fire!! I had a decent amount of shields and obviously loads of weapons but it just wasn't happening. I had another stab at it with the red tail the other and managed it, I forget what I used though.

I've just finished it with the Zoltan Adjudicator on easy. That ship is hard work, way too easy to get hammered if you get boarded or if things catch fire. I lost several times in the first couple of sectors. This time I got incredibly lucky and picked up a Burst Laser 3 in literally the first fight - they offered to surrender, which I usually ignore, but they were offering me that so obviously I took it. I didn't actually end up using it for a while as I didn't have the power for it. I also picked up a second Halberd Beam, so for a time I was using two of them which was quite effective, but by the end it was ion blast, BL3 and Halberd. I got a bit battered in the first round of the flagship, but I don't think I took a hit in the second and third rounds. My evasion was way up and I had four shields, so it was pretty easy by then. I had a teleporter so I could get over and knock out the weapons bays, though my crew was 6 Zoltans and 2 Engis, so I was sending the Engis over. I'm not sure whether I'd have been better off sending the Zoltans, thinking about it, as while their health is 30% lower the Engi damage is 50% lower, but I was using the Zoltans to power a bunch of stuff as it was so it made sense for them to stay.

I always try and make sure I have a couple of Mantis on crew to send over to the flagship. Also helps when you get boarded.

As for configuration, ideally I want a crew transporter and cloaking. It is then a choice between drones or hacking. Not really a fan of mind control.

I actually had my first defeat in a while last night. I had a burst laser 3 along with a burst laser 2 and a chain laser. It seemed like a good configuration, but I ended up missing so many shots that it took an age to get its shields down. Consequently, I took a beating on the first phase and never really recovered. There is something to be said for using beam weapons that can't miss.

I'm racking up the wins now. I finished it in the Bulwark this evening; first try with that ship. Missiles were augmented with a BL2 and occasionally a pike beam. I picked up cloak and teleporter and then sent a couple of mantises on away trips. I used a heal bomb to keep them topped up without bringing them back over which was very handy. I didn't lose any health on stage one of the boss and only three on stage two, though I took a bit of a beating on stage three for some reason.

I've unlocked the Mantis ship somehow. No idea how as I didn't do the quest, it just gave it to me. I need to find the slug ship now, then I'll have all the A layouts.

Edit: Ah, apparently with the Advanced Edition you can unlock ships by completing the game with certain other ships. I got the Mantis one for finishing with the Zoltan ship last night. So now if I finish it with the Mantis I'll get the Slug.

Gah, just had the stupidest loss with the mantis. I ended up at the flagship with ion blast 2, small bomb and fire beam. I realised too late that I had no way of generating hull damage... The only way I could deal damage was the bomb, or with the fire beam torching systems. Of course then all the crew died so the auto repairing AI took over, which meant I had to torch everything, wait for the oxygen to go, wait for the fire to go out, wait for the AI to repair things, then use the fire beam again.

Second stage took an age. I made it to the third with four health and two missile volleys finished me off.

What a stupid mistake!

125 hours logged now... I've unlocked the crystal cruiser by completing the game with all A and B layouts. My last one was slug B. I'd read it was a dreadful ship, but I did it first time. Maybe I got lucky. Picking up some mantis and human crew definitely helped, and a good old burst laser 2. I kept the Artemis and heal bomb right to the end.

I scored a win with the stealth B today as well. Good fun cloaking and then letting rip with the glaive beam. That thing is ridiculous.
