Fuel price discussion thread (was ‘chaos’)

We're short of truck drivers, ultimately it's the Government's fault. Press might have shone a light on it, but having seen the supermarkets emptied during COVID it's not like didn't see panic buying as a likely event. They were unprepared for the last two years , then for extra LOLz sat on their hands for a few days until they realised it wasn't going away. Over a week later and the South East is still screwed. Of course it's the Governments fault.

The problem goes way back to relying on forign drivers in the first place. But a big shortage is being caused by the DVLA right now, there are loads of new drivers still waiting for licences to be approved.

Did my first non-normal fill up today. Parked in the Asda car park for a Parkrun with the kids, and saw the fuel was both available and free of queues, so topped up from a little under half a tank.

Feels like it's getting back to normal anyway, but I'm sorted for two weeks now in case of any further issues.

where are all these independent petrol stations the petrol resellers association keeps referring to (being in need / dry) ?

eg https://inews.co.uk/news/where-can-...ol-stations-have-run-out-panic-buying-1220595
There are 8,380 petrol stations in Britain but the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) estimates between 50 and 90 per cent of the 5,500 independent petrol stations it represents had run dry by Sunday.

are they including the supermarkets as independents ? can't rememeber ever visiting an independent .

I was watching some working class Tory truck driver on YT the other day saying the problem is because truck drivers don't get paid enough so they are leaving the industry. At the same time he's frothing at the mouth about the DVLA workers being on strike.

So it's OK for the truck drivers to want better pay and working conditions but not for anyone else.

It's not the current government's fault. This goes back to Blair opening the flood gates to cheap labour from abroad.

If you claim that it's the fault of a previous government, then surely then it's reasonable to suggest that it's a problem which can be rectified by the current government?

The current government has been in power for 11 years. If, as you say, the problem is a reliance on cheap foreign labour from abroad, which was enacted by "opening the floodgates" 14 years ago, then surely the incumbent government should have taken steps to mitigate the problem before closing the floodgates. Are you saying they can't share responsibility for making a problem worse if that problem didn't originate under their administration?

I've wondered the same. But then I live in a built up area, so I guess there's no real room for independent garages. I imagine they are more popular in rural areas.

I had a friend at University whose family owned a petrol station. It was ESSO IIRC. So I imagine a lot of the smaller outfits are franchises?

I think when it comes to petrol stations, they're often 'franchises' - so BP don't necessarily own all the BP garages you see.

Despite carrying big brand names, I suspect most of the BP, Shell, Esso etc. you see are independently owned franchise sites

They did change it...

Yes most petrol stations are franchises but a lot of the franchises are big companies with a lot of sites rather than just a one man band one garage set up. Although there are a few left.

I don't doubt you. I imagine that they fall into independent category though, regardless if they're bigger than your average corner shop.

I know the two Shell stations in my town are owned by the same person.

I was shocked and saddened to see an ambulance at the back of a long queue yesterday. They shouldn’t have to queue. I’d happily wave them by. No doubt plenty of morons would want to fight over it though.

A brilliant post from a local vigilante yesterday who went along the queue nosing at peoples fuel gauges. Christ this situation makes me despair at humanity.

I’ve got enough for another week, but then it’ll be another 5am start to get in another queue. Going to need a can of petrol soon too, I’m sure that’ll go down well. I’m well up for a fight if anyone has an issue though :p

not many queues here in SW London. only because supplies are out!
thinking of how smug I could be if I had an electric car - who's got range anxiety now?! :)
