FujiFilm Announced: FinePix X100

I'm not sure about that. Despite the M9's interchangeable lens I always ended up using the 35mm Summicron F2. I just seemed perfect for this type of camera. The fact that Fujifilm have chosen the same specification fixed lens speaks volumes.

Anyway, I'm having one as soon as they are available. I love the simplicity and the hybrid viewfinder looks like a real step-up from the M9 rangefinder. The X100 is a supplementary camera to my DSLRs, and for that purpose it should do well.

It is a lovely focal length no odds and good for most shots, but personally, spending that much I'd partly want the flexibility but mainly the ability to take the glass forwards to a newer body in 3 or 4 years time (it's a 35mm f/2, it's likely account for 20-25% of the value of the camera - shame not to be able to keep it).

I do see why you want it though and I'm sure it'll suit you down to the ground. I'm not questioning that it's good, just that it's good value...

Really? I'm still mega lusting after an M9. I love my M6 but the time it takes to go from pressing the shutter release to receiving the photos back takes ages and it's pretty expensive, especially when you haven't loaded the film properly (twice :o ) and get back reams of nothing after spending so much time setting shots up..

The X100 looks good and may replace my GF1 depending on dynamic range and a few other things, I love the looks as well. However, I'll be hitting F5 to see if you put your M9 up Spie, the thought is already making me sweat. :)
It's for sale mate, in MINT condition, still under guarantee and with a frame count of 700.

Summicron 35 is sold (subject to funds arriving). In addition to the M9 I have a 28mm Summicron F2 and 50mm Summicron F2, all MINT and less than a year old.

You could send an email to jobs@ and it'll find its way to me :)

The X100 looks the business, but it is a lot of money for a fixed focus lens compact.

For a lot less you can get a Leica D-Lux 5 which has a Leica Summicron lens. It zooms from 24mm to 90mm (max aperture is f/2.0 at 24mm and f/3.3 at 90mm) -costs around £700.

or you could go for the same camera badged as a Panasonic, namely the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX5 - same camera, same lens, different badge for around £370

There are very very slight cosmetic differences between the two cameras - Leica even have the cheek to charge nearly £70 for a screw in handgrip that the Panasonic has built in!

The X100 isnt a fixed lens compact, it has a APS-C sized sensor in it which is the same size as a non full frame DSLR. If you want to compare it to a camera on the market today it'll be the Leica X1 which is about £1400 and doesnt have a viewfinder.

Or the Sony NEX5 - which has the same or better sensor and interchangeable lenses for half the price. Neither is an exact comparison though and that's the point, the only reason it's being called anything other than 'massively expensive' is because it's fairly unique today.

There is no direct competitor - it has the manual controls and retro looks of the Leica M9 but not the price and I think that's the closest comparison because, like the M9, it's a camera you'll buy with your heart not your head.

It's difficult to rationalise the cost of it using logical means, a compact like the S95 is smaller and much cheaper, even an entry level DSLR likely provides higher image quality and performance at a lower cost. A more conventional EVIL camera provides a cheaper middle ground.

Still, I'd love one, I may well end up with one...

If it interests anyone, Clifton Camera's have a demo unit in store to play with...and I have done so. My view is...

Disappointing. It feels far more electronic and compact like (in handling, it's also really quite big) than I was expecting. I mean it's lovely as a piece of engineering but seems a little deficient as a camera strangely, a shame as I wanted to like it a lot.

Disclaimer - I have and regularly use a Nikon FM2n and I am very tempted by a Leica M9, this may in combination have affected my view of the x100 but I stand by it being somewhat disappointing.

DxOMark for the X100, pretty good sensor by the looks of thing.

Funny you should say that bigredshark as I am very tempted to let go of my M9 due to drastic changes in my style of photography this year but unsure of where it I would advertise it apart from ebay.

No question, it produces good images but a D5100 / 600D does as well for less money, in my view the x100 was always about a certain luxury market. My feeling of the handling is that it doesn't live up to that market (basically, it handles as well, give or take, as a 4/3rds camera, the viewfinder is nice but it's still well below SLR 'feel' (instantaneous response and direct feel if you know what I mean).

I thought very hard about making spie an offer for his when he was selling it but I had to come down against in the end. I would be interested in hearing if you do decide it's surplus to your needs (particularly if you have a 35mm summilux too) but I would warn that I'll probably have to pass as I should be buying a D3s (or D4) for work purposes really.

I'm doing enough commercial work that the costs of hiring bodies every time is becoming prohibitive and stuff which will pay for itself should be the priority rather than personal toys (which, end of the day, an M9 would be)
