hi, i am going to be selling an old HDD to someone, but i want to fully erase it so that even recovery software cannot recover the data, as i had a lot of financial data on it.

is there a way to do this?

DBAN as Cew27 suggests is probably the best option, you can get it from here and it gives you multiple options for how many passes you want to do, after a few passes it is largely academic but the US DoD wipe does 8x I think and it should be safe. If anyone is that willing to look for your data then I'd suggest physically destroying the drive and heading for a non-extraditable country post haste.

if you are reaaly realy paranoid dban it twice at 8 passes this should ensure that not ever forensics can recovery it (if memory serves me right for magnetic storage media such as hdd's 5 layers can be recovered so 6+ passes to be safe)

If you have Gay Pr0n you dont want your family to find, you simply can run likes of Maxtors Powermax/Maxblaster or any other equiv from HDD vendors inc WD.

Once you do a Low Level Format your clean, do it more than once if your paranoid.

these guys are gonna drive you crazy with complex software and tools to use.

use this pal:
http://hdtune.com/

get the trial version of hdtune pro and you can do a simple 7 pass DoD 5220.22-M erase on the drive and it will be IMPOSSIBLE to recover the data on that drive.

simple and department of defence level effective.
