fully erase HDD

The Methods I suggested will not care if its 100 Partitions.

You boot to it so it will be before Windows load so no Partitions.

Auto makes a Bootable Floppy for you. : http://www.tacktech.com/pub/mirror/maxtor/PwrMxEn.exe (inc in the Hirens Boot CD).

Or a Bootable .ISO on a CD : " tacktech.com/pub/mirror/maxtor/PwrMx423En.iso " (wont let me post, copy/paste into Web Browser. :)

You really cant get it any more idiot proof. :p

if its and old HDD why bother, how much will you get £15, surely it would be easier not to risk "data" falling into the wrong hands for the sake of a few quid.

I don't know what size of hard drive you sold but if as suggested they are willing to pay over the odds then I have my doubts that they'd have been able to recover the data anyway. Either in having a clue what tools to use or knowing that it could even be done. :)
