furlough and pay cut

Haha good on you @Andreworex

I'm going through some shenanigans at work at the moment. I've been doing my managers job unpaid for about 5 years, even after rejecting a 'deputy manager' role they offered me 2 years ago for 3k more than my supervisor role. I am seriously thinking about leaving now.

I am on a bit more too and I am on 1 months notice. I've been with my company for 20 years. They have started to change anyone above a supervisors notice period to 3 months though.

It's sort of irrelevant really because it's clearly absurd for a non-manager role and it's always a risk to keep someone on for longer than they want to be, especially in IT :p

The new role I have been hired for starts on 3 months notice also after the 6 month probation, I think 3 months is becoming the standard, nearly done month 1 of the 3 months, still to hire my replacements.

Business has decided to hire 3 new people to do my 1 job...all on more than I was on a year ago so its actually cost them 3 x my salary in year one to hire these 3 people excluding agency recruitment costs, and they say business owners are smart people...!

Notice periods for employees aren't worth the paper they are written on. Pretty much unenforceable. A business would have to demonstrate real material loss to be awarded any recompense from an employee not service their notice. I'm not aware of a single case of this happening. Employment courts take a very dim view of coercive labour practices.

Yup, both times I've handed my notice in I've been placed on gardening leave instantly :D

Great result, absolutely love a bit of justice porn, well done!

Also nice to see a certain wrong-about-everything-all-the-time poster keep his track record going!

Congrats on the new role!

Like a lot of things in life, have conviction, know what you want and stick to your guns if you know you are right..

I'm on the fence with notice periods, I've never held anyone to one, I tend to be sensible and do what works best for both parties.. I've had 3 or 4 people now that all said they'd work until the last minute and ensure they handed everything over and so far you can see after 2-3 weeks max they start to take their foot off the gas and for obvious reasons start winding down so I can't imagine how much sense it makes to keep them for 3 months..

I had a 3 months notice as a Linux Sys admin for a small company that were Oracle Cloud consultants. A complete S show of a company when it came to handing in my notice. Held me to the 3 months, failed to replace me and had the usual non existent manager. I wanted to leave earlier as had no work to do and my new employers wanted me to start ASAP.

It was the best thing i ever did leaving them. I went from a dead end job and moved into Security. I more than doubled my salary as well.

In these kinds of situations, what's stopping you just walking out? Sure, you won't get paid for the notice period, but you could start the other job earlier.

One of the reasons I was leaving was the lack of work and general boredom. I spent a lot of my time studying hence the move into security. It was one of those we use Macs so we need zero additional security type companies so there was no progression for me.

Part of the issue was the recruiter gave my new employers my wrong notice period but I wanted to honour my contract.

What job role are you moving to? I'm curious to see if my experience over notice periods matches up with yours.

Very similar sounding to Beerbaron, IA Leadership role, I was/currently am a jack of all trades "head of IT" previously but vast experience in IA/Security inside and outside of my paid employment so a logical move, will continue to be a leadership role with governance and policy consultancy etc.

Yeah, I'd expect 3 months notice for a job at that level.
