Future Car Icons!? Your Views??

The cars you are looking for generally fall into two camps: Cars that were rare or limited when they were orginally built (step forward Lotus Carlton and Escort Cosworth) and mass produced cars that the public take to their hearts for some reason (VW camper/beetle, Fiat 500, mini etc). The first type are usually fairly easy to spot as long as the manufacturer doesn't ruin it by deciding to release more (Clio Williams anyone?). The second group are much more difficult to spot early on, which is why I'm going to leave it there :p

Phase 1 Renault 19 16v! :p

Already quite rare, they sell cheap, get thrashed and crashed or broken for parts.

Fair enough, it has the Megane/coupe as its successor, but that's pap in comparison!

In the 70s there were people who though that classics were all pre war era cars and that 70s VW campers were for awful hippies. Roll on 30 years an the pre war classic bufs are all dead and the 'mad fools' paying top mulah for campers are people that share your view point ;)
Nope, disagree! Anyway, prewar cars are vintage! Nowhere near as mad fools paying 30K for a modern drossbox then having to sell it for 5K a few years later, at least old ones hold their value or go up.

Modern cars make people drive aggressively with a frown or extreeeeeeme boredom, I've never see anyone driving an old'un like that. Even way back when, the cars were designed to make you drive with a grin.

Take Mk1 Cortinas for example, cool then, cool now. Mini Cooper, cool then, cool now. 57 Chevy, cool then, cool now. 32 Ford, cool then, cool afterwards, cool after that, cool now, cool for 75 years :D

the clio 172/182 will be classics, just like the 205 gti has become. the v6 will be a definite classic just like the R5 Turbo II.

Criteria for classic status is a combination of one or many of the following
  • Be an exotic marque/prestige badge
  • Have motorsport pedigree
  • Be rare (Exclusivity)
  • Have been desirable when new
  • Have cultural significance
  • Have design or engineering significance
  • Have driving appeal
  • Be worth investing time and money in

Taking all that into account I would say the Clio V6 is a future classic but not the Sport 172.

I would also say the Racing Puma is a future classic

I didn't say that to be a classic it had to be all of them, note the words - one or many ;)

Well I reckon the fiat cinquecento will become a modern classic. Probably the definitive mini of the 90's and you just don't get cars with that kind of raw edge any more.
When the 90's trend comes around in fashion in a decade or so I think their value will rise. Look at fiat pandas, they are already classed in insurance as classics but unlike pandas, cinquecentos won't rot. The last of the Italian micro cars. Look at the 2cv, the beetle and the old fiat 500, you don't need power to become classic.

Think of a car and score it out of 10 against each of those categories I posted above, total up the score to see if the car is potential classic.

Above 65 = Future Classic
Between 35-64 = Maybe
Between 0-34 = dud

:)

2nded Especially the phase 1. Ok not as pretty but they are very rare now and I get the impression there's a fair few megane coupe owners now hankering after their old R19's!!

woot for early 1991 metallic black H reg phase 1 19 16v with 2.0 16v megane coupe engine conversion ownage! ;)

People don't realise, but they only made the phase 1 19 16v for 1 year.

Oh, and the phase 1 is every bit as 'pretty' as the phase 2, and then some :D

Clio sport 172 fits those requirments.

Yes but so does most of the BMW range, you can hardly say they will all be classics.

Do you think a 172 will be a classic, like i said it fits some of the requirments so there is no reason why it shouldnt be.

No, I do not think the 172 will be a classic. It's a great car but.. it brought nothing new to the table, isn't of historic significance, etc etc... it's just a decent hot hatch.

Arguably the 172 is a better car than the V6 Clio but the V6 Clio will be a classic for sure. It's not about how good it is..

Ok what about the clio trophy?

A 182 with trick suspension? It's just an evolution of an already good car - yes it was great, yes the trick suspension made a huge difference but will it make it a classic?

Probably not. Just becuase they didnt make many doesnt make it a future classic. There are only 10 Mondeo RSi's - will never be a classic, will simply fade away.
