I don't think that blu-ray will take off- most people I know don't want to buy new equipment. The old dvd players are good enough
old dvd players just dont cut it on 50" screens and if you did have a standerd 32" tube tv you wouldnt buy a bluray player for it!

microsoft far from lost as the fact they didnt force a format on there customers only helped sales of there console.
there common sense aproach not only made them industry leader for there console but also gave them the option to offer the hd format as an option.
Tke for instance if blu ray had failed, sony would have had to scrap the player form there console and change the whole pricing structure of there line.
quite right, however they did try to force hdi on the industry, and that failed didnt it, with sony adopting bd-java instead. there was an interesting article posted over at avforums a week or so ago, i wonder just how true it is? it certainly all seems to fit. its a lot to read but do read it

When you can have a decent enough blu-ray player for around £70 i think it will take off a bit more, prices at the moment ar ea little steep for the mass market in general.
I think DVD will be around for a long time yet, DVD to BR isn't the leap that VHS to DVD was, and BR needs a completely new kind of television with a big enough size to warrant it over DVD.
It already has taken off. Have you seen the sales?
show us, BR sales are piddling next to DVD sales. It hasn't 'taken off' yet.
im wondering, how is it doing compared to the first few years of dvd sales?
Agree DVD is a long way from being dead. But HD TV's are now the only TV you can buy these days at >=23" screen size so the majority of people with an HD TV probably don't have an HD source anyway! I can promise you, HD is easily noticable at 32" screen size.
