Conroe e6600 Core 2 Duo cpu
xp pro
Asus p5b 965 Mobo
2 gig ddr2 533 (2x1 sticks)
300 gig HDD 16mb buffer
1mb Nvidia 7950 GX2
19" vx922 Viewsonic Monitor
550w psu
including accessories (7.1 speakers, keyb, mouse software etc)

Any of u chaps see a problem or drawback with this sort of setup? Though probably better to have faster memory sticks yeah? Is the psu enough to handle the monstor of the 7950 GX2 ? Possibly i will add another one (if its worth it though as why buy another 7950GX2 in quad sli if a newer Graphics card is better?)
Also is the 975x series mobos better than the 965 series for the Conroe? Better ocing?

Trying to buy a rig something as future proof as possible. Used for gaming, video editing, general stuff etc. minimum res 1280 x 1024
(getting the above for around £1500)

Consider chosing a bigger monitor. The GFX card you're getting will show itself at the higher resolutions. I hear the Dell 2007WFP is nice, although I dont like widescreens myself.

its a package deal cant say who :)

(yeah itll poss work out a little cheaper to self-build)

i guess Q-tec PSUs are bad then?

What do ppl think about quad SLI then? and DUAL GPU systems feasibility in principle? Still sticking to single GPU systems or DUAL? (im not sure about it myself)

I would think ATI/Nvidia would have to reduce prices of crossfire/sli cards drastically to make it worthwhile for consumers to buy an old same 2nd card instead of for example a new single dx10 card.

btw while im here i havent noticed OCUK complete Conroe systems yet. Is it still in the testing stage?

dont buy a combo case & PSU. That spec deserves a branded-PSU. Not some generic junker.
Look at an Enermax, Tagan, Seasonic, or whatever. Anything is better than a PSU bundled with a case.

Yep def make sure you have a suitable PSU as suggested above ^^

I'd also go for some Geil PC2 6400 RAM and a 20" widescreen monitor. Widescreen is awesome for games that support it, and the desktop space is nice too :)

It's about the worst time possible to buy a new high end gfx card. DX10 is just around the corner. So buy something cheap or second hand and then upgrade when they come out.

But DX10 will work only with Vista, which will take a lil time to come out, and a lot more time to work properly and work all the bugs out.

i agree you can still get a good card that runs all new games, then spend the money on a better monitor which will last longer.

also build it yourself, with the money you will be spending you will want to guarantee high quality components, some companies put cheap bits in.

IMHO It's gonna be a couple of years at least, probably more before any decent Direct X 10 games are available. And waiting for a DX10 card just for a flakey ( all the others have been why should this be different) operating system upgrade is... well silly

It is not much more than £200 for a high end card. imho you should get one and enjoy it before Vista is released and turns your uberfast PC into a cow. You wanna upgrade to Vista? Wait for service pack 2 or 3 to be released, It might be stable and secure by then.

Waiting for DX10 cards will reduce the price of toprange DX9 cards though! It might be worth waiting to buy a DX9 card.

yeah i see your point but no need to buy the bestest dx9 card, an x1800 or a 7900 will be fine until dx10 comes out and the extra money is better spent on a monitor.

Hi yeah i decided not to go with the retailer i was going to go with because of their after sales rep! i will take the advice about the PSU and graphics card though. Will buy these separately. (prolly 1800xt as that shld run most stuff maxed 1280x1024 comfortably)

I'll Probably buy an almost barebones system then upgrade parts of it.

thanks for the advice. :)
