Hi,

I have around 4K for a build with monitor, look to future proof for at least 3 or so years ! What would you recommend for build ?

thanks

4K is a lot of money, i would wait to see how much the 3090 Ti will cost and wait for the AMD 3D Cache CPU`S.

Nothing is futue proof for very long though, pc parts age quickly

I mean by future proof just a few years, why would you wait a while then ?

Why wait ? because so much money is involved i would want the 3090 Ti instead of just another 3090 build like people had like 14 months ago.

The 3090 Ti is out in about 5 weeks or so and will be the most powerful GPU in the world.

Unless advance has stopped futureproofing is very hard.
And especially graphics cards have extreme loss of performance per buck in top models, which loose huge amount of their value in couple years.

Also current 4K monitor range is badly lackluster:
  • LG has really well balanced features/performance with well usable for most framerates overdrive modes in 27GP950.
But 27" is just small, unless you have very small table and monitor is close to you.
  • Innolux panels used by Gigabytes again have more like semi-wide gamut and badly tuned/too agressive overdrive for variable frame rates:
Lowest setting would be good for 120Hz to max, but below 100Hz brings out lots of overshoot unless disabling overdrive...
Which again makes it slow for above 100Hz.
  • And very wide colour gamut AU Optronics panel using monitors again have response times from five years ago and better fit for max 120Hz.
Such shame we can't have AU Optronics do the backlight/colour filters for proper wide gamut and LG do the LCD matrix/its controller for good response times/overdrive modes.

Hopefully CES brings out some more mature 4K monitors.

Would probably go for a Z690 + 12700k with either an RTX3080ti or 6900XT depending on if you value raytracing and go with a 48inch LG oled TV rather than the overpriced 4K monitors.

Why 4K? I think 1440p is the most realistic option.

£4k easily buys a very solid 4k setup.

MSI MAG X570 Tomahawk WiFi (AMD AM4) DDR4 X570 ATX Motherboard
Seasonic Prime TX-850 850W 80 Plus Titanium Modular Power Supply
Crucial Ballistix RGB 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-28800C16 3600MHz Dual Channel Kit
WD Black SN850 1TB SSD M.2 2280 NVME PCI-E Gen4 Solid State Drive (WDS100T1X0E)
Lian-Li Lancool II Mesh RGB Midi-Tower Case - Black
AMD Ryzen 9 5900X Twelve Core 4.8GHz (Socket AM4) Processor - Retail
be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 CPU Cooler
£1,294 leaving £2,700 for a 3090/3090Ti FE and a CX48 OLED with more than enough change for peripherals, fans or such like. Or go for a 12700k build at a similar cost to the 5900x build. Plus there's a bunch of premium parts in there you could easily cut back on to reduce the cost like a gen 3 SSD, or gold PSU instead. Plus 4k is completely GPU bound, and my CPU is sat at ~20% utilisation so there's no need to go anywhere near the top of any CPU stack at that resolution.

No such thing as future proofing though especially with the transition away from old gen consoles. Could see a system requirement jump

Always a bit of fun putting a rig together with a big budget..
On serious note though, put the 12700k in there as trades blows with both the 5900x and 5950x in benchmarks and costs less than both. Coupled with the asus mobo...they are predrilled to take any 1200 socket cooler so a bit of backward compatibility there. Asus also having a promotion that end today. Buy the mobo and CPU together you get a £70 rebate. If you drop to the 12600k you get a £60 rebate....used the k model as if ever you are without a dedicated GPU at least you can still use the PC as a PC with the onboard graphics
The z690 mobo can take 4 gen 4 m.2 nvme drives, whereas the x570 boards are mainly 2. Also the gpu slot is pciegen5 for a future gu upgrade in the future.
On that note ,I put a 1000w psu in..comes with 10yrs warranty and hopefully will have enough juice for future upgrade down the line...4090 meant to be between 450w and 500w from leaks...
Put 32gb ram as new rig and gives plenty of room for future software that may utilise more than current requirements. The corsair is 3600c18 so something like crucial 3600c16 has tighter timings but is 15% more expensive and at 4k gaming your prob talking 1 or 2 fps difference...crucial sold out too.
Case is the new 011d evolution, due 18th Jan, just as it's very configurable and will show off your build.
Put the 360 hydro corsair aio with LCD display as pricey build. It's the only aio that ocuk sell that comes with 1700 socket fitting in the box if you get a different brand mobo, but you could easily save money by going artic freezer 2 aio instead(will save £150)
Added sn850 1tb as on offer and fast as boot drive and 2tb gen4 crucial p5p as also on offer as 2nd drive to store all your games.you still will have another 2 m.2 slts if you need more storage down the line
Threw in 9 uni fans as daisychainable, on offer and a lot less hassle to wire up as a result, and got a modern system, plenty of airflow, that with give you upgrade scope in future.
Again, you can pair stuff back, downgrade case/fans/ssd/aio etc and save a decent amount, but just a different build to think about.
I'd personally either get the 48in c1 LG OLED or go 1440 ultra wide for gaming.EsaT right, there aren't that many good 4k monitors out there. From reviews I've seen there a big jump inquality from 1080 to 1440p, but less noticeable going to 4k...

Thanks would you that build be better than a Xbox series x or ps5 ?

Haven’t built a build in a good few years so lost touch.

thanks

It would be when you add a GPU like the 3080ti or 6900XT but that said I'd still go with cheaper options for the fans and CPU cooler as you could easily save £200 but I guess it comes down to how much you like the RGB bling.

Assuming you can actually buy one. Probably more chance of buying a pre-built, think for £4k I would get one of the specially made one's with full water cooling etc.

Been another FE drop in Europe this morning, so may get another UK one before the year is out. @baz178 you are sub'd to FEPartAlert?

Last year it was 23/12/20

Comparison with consoles interesting. Couple of vids to look at

above genral discussing diff, but was over year ago..prices somewhat different now..or even more extreme

this is more interesting as recent and hooks up a Xbox series s to monitor/keyboard/mouse...even says for the seies s @ £250, you'd be spending £1000 to £1200 for comparable gaming on a new pc(might be a bit extreme), but get the point across and so swapping the series s for XSX, and suddenly to have a great gaming setup for a fraction of the price of building a pc

My personal pc is B550/5800X/32GB Ram/3080FE/2TB SN850 with 5000X case and QL120's and will outperform the XSX bit currently got it hooked up to a 1080P monitor as spent my money on pc so monitor at a later date. 3080 is a solid card more than capable for 4k gaming and a step up from the 3060/3070 iterations...the 3080ti and 3090 give a boost, but at a massive price increase so 3080 is the best bang for buck 4k gaming card, though for FE drops, it's the one going to sell out in minutes, whereas the 3080ti/3090 you have a bit of time to snag one.
I Have a XSX hooked up to a 50" TV behind me, and at the moment, I'm swivelling the chair and playing on the Xbox at the moment more than the PC...a lot of that probably because it's more fun with the big screen...also being away from pc gaming for awhile, I have to get used to keyboard again, and being left handed, fed up with keyboard controls all being for right handed people...never see options for set of keys to reflect left handed users, and getting annoyed having to rekey everything

Separate note, as you can see with different build above, pc's can look completely different. what sort of build do you actually want..does aesthetics mean much to you..do you want non rgb/rgb, more traditional looking case such as the lancool that Joxean put in or the more flamboyant(looking for right word??) that the o11D cases give etc?

review of some mobo's too...with Asus offer ended today, I'd look at the MSI Z690 tomahawk as slightly cheaper than the tuf mobo now(though has 3 x gen4 nvme and 1 x gen3 nvme slots as opposed to 4 x gen4 on the Tuf). for comaprable price to the tuf is the MSI Edge with 4 x gen4 and slightly better vrm to the tomahawk..they do review the Z690 plus wifi D4 in there too and it does pretty well in the review, though has weaker vrm's

If you're not in a hurry, wait for next promo from Asus(they have them all the time, and if you want an asus mobo that is) and buy your parts as and when they get discounted..found when buying my stuff prices of cases/ssd's/psu's etc seemed to yoyo around(got my RM1000x for £122), Ram just got cheaper and been fairly stable now.

Absolutely, but that shouldn't come as too much of a surprise for 8x the budget of a PS5.

I wouldn't buy that build because it's so wasteful with money, but not in a particularly good way where you can justify it a little bit because it was best in class components. For example, an AIO for £250 that is worse in every way that actually matters (temps and noise) vs an Arctic LF 2 360mm RGB for £110.
Or C18 timings on memory when you're already £2k in to a build still missing by far the most expensive parts of a 4k gaming setup:GPU and screen.

Sorry been away over Christmas and only looked at the thread. I’m confused now with the builds suggested what the best for the money?
