Just wanted to confirm that if running a g-sync monitor then Nvidia control panel settings source as follows

G-sync on (obviously)
V-sync off

Then in games settings
Vsync off

Nothing else needs to be changed?

I've also noticed my gpu runs hotter with g-sync enabled, guessing it's something to do with with my new monitor bieng 144hz rather than 60hz so card can now push more fps to it?

Nothing to do with "pushing more frames to it" its lilley your getting exactly the same frame rate just your monitor can obviously refresh 84 more times per second.

The heat is i believe a bug forcinng the card to run at higher idle clocks when using a 144hz monitor

That's what I sort of meant I know I'm not getting more fps from the card as such but the monitor can refresh as you say 84 times a second more.

Didn't know about the 144hz bug, I'll Google it. Do you you if there is a fix for it?

Well if you are playing at 1080p than 980ti can push more than 60fps in most games.
If your previous monitor was 60hz and you was playing with v-sync on then yes with your new monitor you will be pushing more fps and your gpu will be running hotter.

Also I got 144hz g-sync screen and 980ti too and when not gaming it down clocks to around 135mhz as it should when running desktop at 144hz.

I believe a custom setting to make windows 120hz but seitch to the full 144hz in game is the only way but i dont have experience of how to do it sorry

Thanks, just googled it.
The extra heat from the gpu isn't a problem as I'm on water but was just curious as to the cause.

No its not.

G-sync ON (NCP)
V-sync ON (NCP)

In game- Vsync off

Ostensibly (though there seems to be some problems in the latest drivers):

G-Sync: On

V-Sync (NVCP): On - framerate will always cap to the monitor max refresh, G-Sync is always on

V-Sync (NVCP): Off - G-Sync is applied upto the max monitor refresh, framerates above that will be rendered but with G-Sync disabled when this happens which will result in tearing at high framerates - gives a compromise if you want the lowest possible latency in fast paced games with G-Sync helping to make things a bit better if your framerate does drop.

I believe that with G-Sync on and V-Sync on you effectively revert to V-Sync behaviour when you hit the monitor refresh rate in that the application's render rate will be throttled to match the refresh rate - in this case using the fast setting will mean the application will render as fast as possible even once you hit the refresh rate but frames that don't match the G-Sync window will be dropped - can result in lower latency but in some cases can induce noticeable stutter.

In theory the application setting option would mean that you can change the behaviour of how G-Sync works in relation to capping at the max refresh or not via the ingame V-Sync option but as below that isn't recommended.

In game V-Sync setting should be ignored at driver level but as some games do their own V-WAIT timing stuff with V-Sync set to on which can cause incompatibilities it is worth turning it off in games just incase.

I should have mentioned that with the Fast setting you shouldn't ever see tearing while it renders as fast as possible only frames that actually match the G-Sync window will be displayed but it does reduce latency over normal G-Sync settings - however as I mentioned the latest drivers seem to have 1-2 issues and I've sometimes seen tearing with the fast setting at odd moments.

In the old drivers if you selected Gsync it would default to vsync on in ncp but with the new drivers it is set to use application settings.
I think it actually works better in some games with in game vsync.

I run:

G-Sync on
V-Sync off
FPS limit 120

Framerate limit with v-sync off still seems to be the best way to get lowest latency - I've experimented with 120, 125 (as my muscle memory is more used to those) and 135-143 and been slowly moving to 135 as it seems the best mixture of low latency and ability for my hardware to sustain with "lowpro" settings in fast paced FPS games.

Yeah for the fastest performance i turn off vsync, you can tell when its on, even if your only hitting it every once in a while, Gsync-on vsync-off framerate capped gives the best results to me.
