I would expect them to shut down production of the 8600 series of cards and let the 8800GTS 320mb take the 8600 series market.
It probable is. I would think it will be close to the spec of the top end card which ought to be called the G90 however, I very much doubt it is the spec of the G92 midrange card.
Just depends what Nvidia release first.

If true, looks like the G92 will be a viable alternative to the 8800 GTS 320Mb.
Higher clock speed, less stream processors but higher memory bandwidth and the extra memory ought to make it faster than the 8800 GTS 320Mb.
and what we gonna do till then? twiddle our thumbs? and by the time nvidia release info the card will already be out on the shelves.

One thing to bear in mind is that NV really don't need to bring out a new high end card, because the 8800ultra is still faster than anything the competition has to offer.
I think if these rumours are true it is good news for Nvidia as it will put more pressure on the midrange segment. That said if they could get 2900xt beating performance for £200 it would be a good thing also (say a 8900GTS).

Even the 8800GTS isn't beaten by a great deal by the competition. (HD2900XT)
