Gainward BLISS GeForce 7800 GS+ AGP

Hi Guys

Thanks for the advice

Vegeta, i will do as you suggest, the reformat, and see how that goes.

Like yourself, i have removed and replaced coolers, on my other vga cards too, and understand that it is quite simple to do, yet i am reluctant to do this, as if it turns out to not be the problem, and the card still behaves the same way, i will have invalidated the warranty --> there goes my RMA and my $$$$ lol

Would Ocuk, understand if i had done it-- i doubt it

Dont get me wrong, i want to, but sounds like i am up **** creek without a paddle at the mo!

Lazy-boy, thanks, i will reformat, and try different drivers

Is it just me, or are those 3dMark scores far too low? I would have thought for a top-flight card they would be much higher.

I was tempted to go for a card like this, but the price put me off as well as the fact that it wouldnt have any re-sale value next year because by then everyone would have probably moved onto PCI-e which would mean no money back, and thats too hard to imagine.

I cant imagine many people paying the £350+ price range to get a card like this that will be outdated in less than a years time. I dont think many people will be asking for this when they are all on PCI-e. Is there any point buying this when its getting to be old connection.

I have got an AGP port myself, and, like many, wont be making that crucial upgrade until next year. I might just go out and buy the Gainward 7800GT version, but I think they are being cheeky with there pricing

We only use it to get the card running the best we possibly can, I think the score is low probably down to the processor?

The reason why it is scoring low because its probably set up for quality. If he changes his driver settings from quality to high performance his scores would definitely go into the 8500-9000 range. I've got the first edition Gainward 7800GS and I get roundabout 8500 in 3dmark05.

Update!

yesterday evening, i only had one slow down on the frame rates and 1 lock up, thing seem to be improving, as it was happening almost every time i played!
we shall see how things progress!

A question-- would a p4 3.2ghz s478 with 1mb l2 cache (prescott) give me better scores than my current northwood which only has 512mb l2 cache

reason i ask is, i have 1 lying around, doing nothing, and i know my board is good for 250mhz fsb-- but saying that i have heard that northwoods are better for gaming, and prescotts better for benchmarks.

what do you think? should i swap it over?

Thanks vegeta,
I think i will swap it over on the weekend.

just another thing, looking through my bios, i don't have a setting for agp aperture, and sandra, shows my agp aperture set to 128MB--and i can't change it

My other motherboard has this bios setting, on another pc, (asrock/amd setup/s754 set up) and on it you can select up to 256MB aperture size

Do you think this bios setting could also be playing a part on the low scores, seeing as this card has up to 512MB ram

Thanks for your help!

Hi laz y boy

hmm, i think you are right about the heat, i know the prescott runs hotter, but i have good cooling, and the zalman cooler i have works great in throwing the heat out the back of the case--plus, although the prescott gets hot, i heard it does not throttle down until temps get near 70 degrees celcius, and i dont think i would ever get those temps!

what do you think i should do-- keep my northwood 3.0 c @ 3.75 (never goes over 38-40 degrees at load in current ambient room temperature of 20 degrees) or switch to the prescott 3.2, and probably get it up to 3.9-4.0ghz (with a possible increase in temperature up by 15+ degrees,

yet might be a better combo/ better results/fps with this card

dilemna-- i hate this

if you know the prescott will clock higher than the northy, then by all means drop it in and use that instead, however if it doesnt clock as high or adds too much heat then stick with your current solution, its best for you to try it out for yourself.

I often wonder about these Prescott's. I have a 3.2 one myself, and even though I have an IC7 Max 3 (purely by luck) I cant seem to get the speed above 3.36, but thats because the heat will make it far too hot. Im using the stock cooler which is what is stopping me go all the way to 3.8 at least that I know I could achieve, but requires me to bend the fins on the northwood cooler to fit in something like a SI-120 & Akasa Amber.

Oops, I went really off-topic there

Anyway, I have one of these glorious cards now, yet to install it though.

What kind of speed can I expect to get using this with my P3.2 & 2gb ram? Would I be CPU limited?

Whats the best driver version to use with this one?

I`ve got a P4 3.2 with 2gb ram and with my non + 7800GT got 6581 in 05 and 3355 in 06 . Some of the higher endish AMDs get much higher scores than this so an even faster card like the 7800 + will be faster than the non + but will be more CPU limited in your case. :(

As for drivers I`m just using standard drivers but there are a lot of others to choose from

'06
'05

Considering my setup is a 754 and a REALLY CRAP MSI board, I get good enough scores. Going to get my DFI board pretty soon and aim for a 9K mark in '05.

'06 is more dual core based, but I'm happy with the score I get.

These GPU's in my opinion are CPU Limited, but a slight OC can help. Your setup really shouldn't have a problem.

Are you running your P3.2 @ stock levels by any chance? With that mobo you should be able to have some overclocks which, in theory, should give you higher scores. I have a IC7 Max 3, and at the moment im on 3.36, will go to at least 3.6 when I get my new air cooling put on, as the stock heatsink that I have is really quite useless.
