Galaxy Alpha

I like it - it's a tidy looking phone. Not a bad choice for someone who wants a medium sized phone.

I know samsung dont care for specs these days but I still would like to know whats under the bonnet. They dont tell you anything except it has a 4.7" HD display.

edit;

720p display oh dear, I know its 4.7inch but really is 1080p too much to ask....

Apparently it has a 1650mAh battery though... which is erm, kinda small?

This phone has really nice looks, but guessing the specs won't be up to much.

From the Verge...

The Galaxy Alpha is terrifically thin and light, though that’s not the first thing you’ll notice about it. It happens to be damn good looking too. The sheen from those polished edges makes all the difference, combining with the lustrous Super AMOLED display to make a great first impression.

Some devices look better in press photos than reality — the LG G Watch R is a recent example — but the Galaxy Alpha is exactly the opposite. You have to see it in person to appreciate its slick and refined look.

Everything is appropriately proportioned, the 4.7-inch screen size feels just right, and ease of one-handed use is as good as you’ll get from any device in that size class. Those who might have felt let down by the new Moto X moving to a larger 5.2-inch screen may find solace in Samsung’s more compact Alpha. Ergonomically, this phone is a delight. I don’t want to call it perfect, but it kind of is.

It's still £70 more expensive then the Z3-Compact which has monster specs a 2600mAh battery, double front facing stereo speakers, a better camera, smaller bezels and all the waterproofing goodness going on. Just seems it has it beaten in pretty much every way other then the fancy metal rim.

I dunno I kinda like the quirky look of the Z3C, then I have always liked Sony designs. I will admit the Alpha with the luxurious metal rim looks nicer though, but I just can't get past the things the Z3C has over it.

I am over the moon to see these smaller form-factor phones coming to the market though, a year with the Nexus 5 has made me realise even that is slightly too big for me. I want to be able to easily and comfortably use my phone with one hand.

This is so much better design wise though than the Z3C. And I think Samsung just knew they it had to pull out the stops design wise to compete with the iPhone. The Z3C's sides look like cheap plastic and very off putting. The rest of the hardware looks good though.

Do you work for Samsung? this is 250-ish worth phone being sold at 2x the price.

This is no iPhone competitor. it's just another samsung, this time with metal edges. nothing interesting, move on.

I agree neither is perfect. I'm still waiting for my next phone, nothing available now is shouting 'want' at me. I'm happy to wait though, not landing a chunk of money on any old half assed junk.

Almost the perfect phone. How to make it better:

Slightly rounded to give bigger battery.
1080P screen.

Even so, this might me my choice over the Z3 compact (terrible experience with Sony since the Z - 2 phones replaced due to poor quality control and bug support).

1860mAh. It has a 20nm SoC I believe and the latest gen OLED. Should be good enough stamina wise.

Alas it seems over here we're getting a bog standard Qualcomm 801, which I believe will be 28nm as Samsung only buy them in, the 20nm SoC is the Exynos 5430 which as usual isn't available over here (Probably Korea only).

I'm not even sure why they do that anymore, as far as I know the LTE issues are long gone, power wise the leaked benchmarks put it easily ahead of the 801. Potentially yield I guess with this chip but that doesn't explain the previous releases.

I like the look of the phone though, it reminds me (both in looks and dimensions) of my SGS2 which was quite nice 'in the hand'. But I think the battery life of the 801 versions will be poor.

Then there's the cost, £550-580, no thanks, guess I'll be sticking with the N5 for a while yet :p)
