GAME acquires Multiplay for £20m

Time to cancel my TS Subscription with Multiplay then - hate GAME with a passion.

Pretty big news in the world of UK events & e-sports. Great news for the people at MPUK that their hard work has been rewarded / noticed. Having a large umbrella might finally allow them to challenge the big European events - e.g Dreamhack.

Though we would never get the full details on any detail, I’m curious to know how this fits with GAMES business model considering they are watching margins in a very highly competitive market place (Retail vs e-sales).

Good luck to both parties and I hope the next time I show my face the familiar faces are still there.

And why did Multiplay sell for only £20m.

I’ve always questioned how much profitability is in i-events, obviously Craig and the team make a healthy amount of money but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a top earner.

Pre-i50 ? Sure, I'd have agreed.

But since the Minecraft, Console, Twitch & special guest explosion, I'm sure a lot has change in terms of revenue from the event.

Not to mention the income from Gameservers and exclusive deals they have with publishers.

Agreed, recent changes into the influx of Minecraft and YT's has created another source of income. I know at i49 it increased footfall by 10,000 people!

I hope this isn't just a sell off for MPUK and that there will be additional funds available.

Time will tell but ultimately, it's a business at the end of the day and Craig & team (Family etc) have done well.

Haven't we been here before? when they bought Barrysworld in 2001-ish. That worked out soooo well.

True that yes Barrysworld disappeared but MPUK has both sides of the business.

1) The server side which I imagine will remain untouched

2) The high street, customer facing side, which we see through I-events. Here GAME will be no doubt looking to improve their footprint either through MPUK directly (Rebranding?) Or via other routes which they already pursue, e.g. larger stand at the events and so on.

As covered by Archeum, they clearly see a lucrative revenue source through acquiring MPUK and letting them continue to run events. I imagine this will be through the number of attendees and hopefully allowing those numbers to continue to grow. (Larger events???)

Hand in hand with that comes the E-Sports point on the whole, whether GAME are really interested in this outside of Minecraft and CoD?

*Edit* Just had a thought, maybe GAME will finally move into digital purchase using MPUK infrastructure and support?

Time will tell.

GAME have offered PC downloads for a couple of years so it's not that.

Very torn on how I feel about this.

My first i-series event was i10, since that event I have loved the work the Multiplay team do. So I am very happy for them, this buyout is a lot of cash for them.

On the other hand, if GAME end up in trouble again this could be the end of them :(

Q. Could Multiplay get any worse than it is?

A. Yes.

Don't like multiplay but Game taking them over is bad news.
