Game controller for PC?

After recently buying myself a nice new gaming pc, I would like to invest in some game pads to use with it, for when I play using the lounge tv rather than pc monitor.

Because of this I would rather have wireless controllers if possible, to avoid trailing leads and tangles.

I haven't really used any of my pc's for gaming for a long time, the last controllers I had for my pc were MS sidewinders and that was some time ago, so I really have no idea about what game pad solutions are available for my pc and more importantly what is considered the best/most practical/best supported/etc.

I play all sorts of games, from FPS's like CoDWaW to sports like Fifa/PES and Tiger Woods golf. I would also like to invest in some more platform type games (mainly to get the mrs more involved in using the pc for gaming and therefore cut down on the nagging around spending money on it ;) )

Any help or suggestions you could give me will be gratefully received.

Ideal, I didn't realise I could use a console controller with my pc.

Having had a look around, I see that you need to get a xbox 360 wireless controller for windows as that comes with the usb receiver.

Does that mean if I want to buy 2 or more controllers they all have to by 'for windows', or can I buy one for windows and the rest standard one running off the wireless reciever that came with the 'for windows' one?

Just wondering if there was any scope for me saving a bit of money when buying a couple of controllers.

I think the wireless receiver that comes with the 'for windows' package will accept multiple connections so you could buy multiple standard controllers too. However this is by no means a guarantee so i would have a quick run around on google and see what you come up with.

Unfortunately, the man speaks the truth.

There are better built pads out there such as SAITEK however, simply for simplicity, the 360 pad wins by a country mile.

Its a poor show by deleopers really, the PC should never be tied to one peripheral but PC games are slowly ignoring most other pads with little to no support given if you want to use anything other than a 360 pad.

DirectX should mean ALL controllers are supported.

You can get a PS3 controller working through usb. Just have a search for the required drivers. Works pretty well for driving games and what not. Unfortunately the six axis function does not work.:)
 
Thanks guys, definately going to go with the xbox 360 controllers, I have found a 'for windows' one for £29.99 free delivery online, just need to find the cheapest standard wireless ones now.
