Game Dev Tycoon piracy article

It is DRM Free :|
I would assume the "three of your computers" is a license thing, not DRM. Relying on you just agreeing to only have 3 copies installed at any given time.

Like I said, I'm not sure of what they would call it but DRM was the closest thing i could think of. if it is as you say and wont do anything if you install it on more than three then you can ignore my complaint, but just hearing 'you can only install it on three computers' set the alarm bells ringing, hence my rant

tbh sounds to me like he couldn't market the game to anyone and came up with this clever idea.

now many people will look at it and probably buy or feel sorry for pirating and maybe buy. just a clever marketing trick . very well played though .

The game itself is a ripoff. The original game was released in 1997 and is available on iOS and Android from Kairosoft.

Screw these guys.

Not really a rip off is it, unless all FPS games where you fight aliens are a rip off of the first one?

There's a game called GameBiz that was before Game Dev Story, so is that a ripoff as well?

Very clever idea.

I can't say that I haven't downloaded games before, but if I do and I enjoy the game, I instantly buy it to support them. I just hate spending £20+ on a game that I only play for 10 mins and drop it. I do seem to enjoy most games though :p

I wouldn't say it's a ripoff. It's just another game that bases its story/content around being a game dev in much the same way many games like BF and COD and a whole host of other FPS based games are VERY similar.

codemasters tried this crap with fade and it never stopped their games being pirated

all it stops is people using clonecd or whatever that program used to be called that could copy most games and leave the copy protection intact

Purchased the game, I've been playing the game for about an hour/2 now! It's similar to Game Dev Story on mobiles, which I once spent all night playing...

I made a company called PloPPoo...

I've made a few rubbish games, made an engine (Poogine), made some more average games and then decided to make Call Of POOTY, which got all 10 on the reviews, which saw my bank balance raise from ~100k to 1.5million now I'm in an office making some random rubbish games that nobody buys and thinking of just making another CoP...

If pirates are put through more trouble than genuine customers, maybe more will buy the real game. Sadly, for AAA games it is currently the other way. Customers get the trouble with always-on requirements and intrusive DRM, while pirates can just download and enjoy. A twisted world.

Fact is that any game can be cracked, so all you do is spend time on something that in the end just annoys your real customers while only slightly delaying the inevitable.
