Game install sizes are getting bigger and bigger... !!

What I never got my head around was how farcry 2 was only 3gb
According to the back of my Far Cry 2 box (in hand), it is 12GB.
I think the proportion of hard drive space used by games has actually gone down, 10GB on a 500GB+ drive isn't that bad. I remember trying to fit the mechwarrior 2 merc install on my pc back in day, 450MB hard drive with a 150MB install needed 
Yep, but what are people expecting. The demand is for better graphics, better sound, better everything while at the same time the resolution of the monitors we are using is getting bigger and bigger.
As for sizes, the installed size of games exceeded 5Gb 5 years ago, and my Mass Effect install is standing at 12.6Gb (installed last week). My Oblivion install is 10Gb but that is heavily modified.
The we have to consider Tera online. According to rumours the beta test download was 21Gb.

SSD is not an issue, you can have Windows and apps on a SSD and a 1TB drive for games.

I look at it as the bigger the install, the better the game will look. As has been pointed out, 1Tb hard drives aren't expensive, and well within the reach of anyone who can afford enough games to fill their hard drive!
Games take 400GB of my primary hard drive. Recently got another 500GB just for music, backups and video editing.
This is why I buy physical when possible rather than Steam et al. Backing up/downloading hundreds of gigabytes is a b****...
Far Cry 2 does only take up 3GB in its game folder. No idea how! It's ridiculous that GTA: Episodes from Liberty City take an extra 15GB on top of the 15GB GTA IV takes up though. Fallout 3 takes only 5GB.

I thought it was 'only' some extra missions on the same islands, or is there also a new island and other new stuff?
To be honest I wasn't really complaining, just a comment. I know the reasons as to why, and as said... a 2TB drive is getting cheaper and cheaper. Looks like 1.5TB give the best price per GB at the moment..
Considering getting a trayless 5.25in caddie and using a 1.5TB as a media drive, and using the 2 x 500GB for games and O/S and the external 500GB as a storage...
then as I fill the media drive up, I can always buy another 1.5TB or something and just swap the drives to access the media files.... Just an idea...
Or another idea I'm toying with is to just scrap the 2 x 500GB and buy 2 x 1.5TB..... Plenty of options... I could always use the 2 x 500GB in a ESATA cage or even place them in USB drive enclosures...

48gb for wow install ? Ouch 
My wow install is about 18GB, though my games drive has about 230gb free out of 1TB. I probably don't need them all installed but it's nice to have the option of playing if I want. Steam alone takes about just shy of 480GB
I just fear HD death and having to download/install tons of data again...

Mine's patched to latest version and is just nudging over 16gb...how did you manage that?

Star Wars Force Unleashed is 25Gb.
To be fair, Just Cause 2 is about 6Gb and that game is HUGE!

Personally I think it's a good thing. There was a time a few years back when DVDs weren't getting properly adopted, most games were still coming out on CD. We've got bluray now and once prices start to drop on the media, the drives become mainstream and production capability ramps up hopefully it will start getting used for games.
Only issue really is with digital platforms like Steam I am very reluctant to uninstall games as I'd either have to back them up or re-download. Not great when you have a slow-ish connection and usage limits.

You can burn your steam games to dvd if you like.
