Game like Freelancer

Sadly there's no games as good as Freelancer. Freespace 2 is good though.

I loved Freelancer and it's absolutely begging for a sequel.

If you've never played Freespace 2, remedy that situation now.

Starlancer is alright too.

Star citizen is for one not exactly " out now " and two isn't the element of the game that's like freelancer. You are thinking about SQ42 :).

SQ42 is just going to be a linear solo space combat game and the prelude to star citizen. Freelancer was a semi open world space combat/trading game and a spiritual successor to Wng commander privateer.

Freelancer was kind of unique for its time, i really enjoyed the multiplayer but third person view, bias to mouse control and simplified combat i didn't enjoy so much.

However it was a very easy game to just pick up and play and exploration was fun and rewarding. Elite dangerous and Evo merc are as close as you'll get with modern titles but the original privateer (and its remakes) are still very much worth a play.

I guess it depends on what elements of freelancer you enjoyed the most.

Freelancer was incredible. It may have been delayed to death but the end game was still simply brilliant and the MP on the Jolt Uk servers was fantastic. Great memories! I'm not sure if a similar single player, story driven experience exists aside from Freespace 2? Elite would work well if you enjoyed the trading aspect of Freelancer.

It was good fun , but i wouldn't say it was incredible, we were lucky it ever got released, Chris roberts hampered the core mechanics with his usual feature creep which left a universe that felt underpopulated and travel became motorways in space, it was the player base and modding support that made freelancer great.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the the Egosoft X games. Similar to Freelancer but I'd say steeper learning curve and slower-paced.

X2 and X3 are probably the best. X:Rebirth was the first game I regretted pre-ordering.:(

Saw the header and immediately thought of the X games.

They differ slightly in that there is much more of a sandbox element particularly X3 and notably Terran Conflict, where you are building stations and a trading empire. Freelancer was very much plot driven in that there was only so much you could do in each area before the game pushed you forward. And, generally, you couldn't go back either as you were by then probably enemies with the primary faction in that sector.

X-Rebirth copied to some extent the highways and super highways system from Freelancer and is slightly more story driven, though you do have to go off and do some trading/exploration to build up money and resources.

Last time I tried to play Freelancer it really kicked me in the noodles - probably less than 20% into the main plot and I was getting wrecked. Carelessly added some mods which then trashed the game, need to delete and reinstall but I've heard the disc is one of those Securom beauties that W10 won't play ball with.

I reloaded Freelancer onto my PC a few months back and it still works fine...perfect balance between space sim and pick up and play. I bought a package for SQ42/Star Citizen and it just looks like it could become mega complicated if they ever finish the bloody thing...

If you love Freelancer, just play Freelancer...no servers now but the single player is alright.
