Game like Freelancer

Got it running though you need the no-CD hack from the mod site to run under Win10.

Currently just grinding BB missions in the New York system to build up my ship before doing the second "plot" mission. However as I recalled earlier, seems you are pretty much forced to keep returning to the main story as levelling up is the only way you can access higher grade equipment.

Still, a darn fine game and it's aged well.

I reloaded Freelancer onto my PC a few months back and it still works fine...perfect balance between space sim and pick up and play. I bought a package for SQ42/Star Citizen and it just looks like it could become mega complicated if they ever finish the bloody thing...

If you love Freelancer, just play Freelancer...no servers now but the single player is alright.
I would love to play freelancer but I can't get it working on windows 10

Thinking about it that may have been before I upgraded to Win10...I've just blatted the PC and done a fresh win10 install so I've probably lost it too, I've been having too much fun with my rift to try it recently...

Just noticed this after sending you an email.

The way I had it working is by using this mod. It sorts everything out with resolution, widescreen and has better graphics and an extended story. Well worth using.

Still struggling to get it working with windows 10. no matter what I try it just won't open, I get no error message just nothing happens.

Doe anyone know if it works with any other os i.e. Linux?

Strange, as I had it working fine. Something else likely is the problem otherwise would not have worked for me either.

Have you tried the mod I mentioned?

Just had a look at the mod you have mentioned and wow! Think I will be downloading Freelancer tonight and trying out the mod, also seems they have active multiplayer server as well. The story mod and shear amount of ships and planets they have added is crazy.

Yep. Very nice mod.

Pretty sure woppy would have the game working fine if he tried it. As I recall you install the mod which just asks to verify you have the game or something. Therefor you are installing a new game, not a decade old one :)

I will have another go tomorrow

Freelancer was incredible. It may have been delayed to death but the end game was still simply brilliant and the MP on the Jolt Uk servers was fantastic. Great memories! I'm not sure if a similar single player, story driven experience exists aside from Freespace 2? Elite would work well if you enjoyed the trading aspect of Freelancer.

I loved freelancer, for all it's flaws it was FUN!

I think this game beat Freelancer:

Obviously came out waaaay before. It was bloody great. I just got the SG2 set. EVE is now free to play (well basic skills and stuff), can always go to the X series, new Starpoint Warlords. There are a few but non as good as Freelancer was at the time especially if you added all kind of crazy mods. Battlestar Galactica mod anyone? Star Wars mods... sooo many.

can always go to the X series

Well X-Rebirth seems to borrow heavily from Freelancer in terms of the super highways etc. In fact, once I've finished this run through of Freelancer I've got a mind to take another run at it. With the patches and DLC added it has become more playable.

The older X-games I would say are less like Freelancer. Much bigger universe and the emphasis very much on building your own empire. I also have to say (and probably remarked on this in previous space game threads) that the play areas in X2 and the X3 series didn't always feel as if you were in space, more like a room or arena. (But still good, though). Also there was (is) very little realisation of how the universe actually sits together on a proper star map, where the systems are relative to each other in galactic terms (as opposed to the room next door).

I loved the gameplay heaps and the single player campaign for what I recall was long but so good as the master plot unravelled. Oh and Juni yes!!

Just realised that I have FL on cd or dvd but haven't had a drive on my pc since 2010 lol

Of course Freelancer also had its origin (no pun intended) in the Privateer spin off from Wing Commander and the later Privateer 2 (where alien ship types were for some odd reason named after Man Utd soccer players). However even if you could find a working copy (and Privateer 2 was very buggy), you'd need an old rig or top level emulator to play these.
