Game(s) you cannot stop playing?

Devil Daggers did exactly this to me until I forced myself to quit....I found that I couldn't stop playing it because of it's one more go nature. Each game might only last minutes, with a very rapid turnaround (no long drawn out time between restarts) and the addition of a global leaderboard which ranks your progress heightened the one more go sensation. If I hadn't made myself stop I'd probably still be trying to beat my personal best! (I stopped at around 62 hours).

Currently H:ZD and Nier: Automata, so the two blockbusters you're slating:p

Compared to Dark Souls 3, they're not as technical, difficult etc. but I like faster combat when you can feel the hits/shots and Nier particularly is just a more unique experience that can't be compared.

Dark Souls 3 is quite a good game, I'm just long past the point when I get the kick out of spending hours learning how to fight and the combat just didn't do it for me in the end (though it's better than e.g. Witcher's, it's just that it's not really my style). I don't feel the game particularly excels in anything else than difficulty and some really fine locations. I guess that's more than enough if you happen to love the combat and the challenge.

I'd love to complete it as I see its appeal but I just don't have the time to get good at it when absorbed with games like Nier, Horizon and Zelda which I find to be better experiences overall. Not to mention I still have to finish Yakuza 0 (120h and counting, had a long break) which is one of the best games released in recent years IMO(and totally unique).

Yakuza 0 might be worth a punt for me... not sure how good the graphics are though(not a graphics man but for a game like this I'd want realism).

Same as OP for me, souls 1 consumed me so bad that all other games shortly after just felt dull and uninteresting. Even today nothing grips me like that world did. Just looking out and seeing areas you can get to in the interconnected map was mind blowing to me. A shame souls never tried to match that again really

More recently Zelda on Switch. A lot of this was due to the nature of the console, being able to just grab it and resume from sleep mode while on the sofa etc allowed me to sink 70ish hours in without even realising. Most time I've spent on a game since souls really

I remember exchanging a few posts with you when DS3 first came out(April 2016!). A couple of people have mentioned Zelda so I got it on the Wii U, decent enough I just do not like anything about the Wii U so I might get the Switch, sounds worth it.

For Honor keeps dragging me back at the moment..although I had a bit of a break for HZD.

It's just such a nice change from all the shooters/TPS games. Wish they'd get on with the ranked mode and stuff though..

I thought this would be right up my ally, but I found the controls not very intuitive, great concept.

This seems to be the best thing to do, just force stopping. It has so much depth though, different builds for multiple playthroughs etc. awesome multiplayer it's going to be harder than cutting right back on the weed!

It's definitely not a game where your skills will transfer easily....gotta put the practice in. I only know one class to a decent standard!

They're not that brilliant but the city at night and the cutscenes look great. The story is also very decent. Most importantly, it runs at 60fps and that makes a huge difference.

The thing is, Yakuza is not trying to be that realistic, it's a quirky Japanese game at heart with lots of fun minigames, sidequests and ridiculousy brutal street brawling:p

You won't find more hilarious and creative sidequests anywhere else (you can trust me on that) and the heat actions are immensely satisfying. The amount of content is also ridiculous. People jump into it expecting a GTA clone but it's so totally not... It's up there with Nier in terms of uniqueness.

Still probably my favourite franchise overall, very old-school and not without flaws but overall an unmissable experience IMO.

I'll finish this run of DS3 then will get this in a sale, really wanted to get into 4 but there was so many other classics out at the same time. Games, like Movies tend to run longer these days. For example, this run of DS3(2 bosses left including optionals) I've spent 90hours! Messing with armour and weapons/rings builds basically plus the NG+ which includes new loot, then the expansions which I haven't touched yet make the game amazing value if you have the game time. I do miss a good adventure with a decent story like Uncharted 4 was, a brilliant 15 hours of fun, not many of these around, I do miss good linear story driven games like Uncharted - most games now, the so called "really" good ones are either open world or lengthy RPG's. More Uncharted games please(that would stop me playing!)!

Oh, I agree with you totally. I had some really good fun with U4 and wouldn't mind more linear games with simple but decently told/presented stories with proper pacing, good mechanics and amazing graphics etc. I really liked the closure to Nathan's adventures, it all felt very satisfying.

Linear games have their advantages. They don't feel as disjointed, the gameplay's usually deeper/more polished and their stories are more focused/better paced (well, unless said stores are simply crap). That's why I still regard TLoU as the best realised story I've ever experienced in a game and one of the best overall packages.

I sometimes want to just fire up a game and get immersed into the story and gameplay, but open world games often feel too ploddy and have poorly paced stories. That's usually why I lose interest when playing most of them, especially when the gameplay isn't up to scratch. The only exception to the rule released in recent years is Zelda IMO because the exploration itself is just splendidly done and there's little to no hand-holding. The gameplay is also very good and everything feels very detailed. All the physics-based puzzles, quirky secrets, enemy behaviour, the way Link reacts to the world and the absolute freedom in climbing etc.

EDIT: Come to think of it, Yakuza is also an exception because the world is very small but filled to the brim with stuff to do so everything feels more focused:p

Street Fighter V. I know it's been criticised, but it's the first time I've actually learnt how to properly play a fighting game. As a result, I'm enjoying making progress, go to local evenings etc. Only a Gold scrub, but learning each time I play.

Other game is a Zelda. Could complete it really now, I have the equipment and bosses beat to do so, but don't want to end it.

Ah most likely mate I posted a fair bit in the souls threads :)

Only done one play through of 3, it was the only one that I didn't feel too compelled to jump right back in with a 2nd run. A bit of series fatigue I think what with bloodborne too

For all its faults, Wildlands is giving me a good run now I've finished HZD.

Having RL friends to team up with turns a mediocre game into a great one IMO.

Resident Evil 4 HD on PS4. I have loved the game for years and must have completed it all the way through over 10-15+ Times.

Other than that, Farcry 4 is also great fun to play and even though I havnt played it lately MGS The Phantom Pain has had over 140 hours from me.

BF1 can't help it, I fire up my pc with the intention of finishing something or installing something new and just end up playing BF1

sometimes I get frustrated with it because I play it too much but sometimes there are some amazing moments that only a BF game can provide
