Gamers Nexus: Best CPU 2024.

That's my point though -
The champ cpus are expensive, I don't like paying a premium when something upper-midrange will do the job.
I doubt I'll even notice the difference over something half the price,
but that coverage of what's a good value current-gen upper-midrange cpu is what's missing,
and I'd expect a "best of 2024" video to cover all the price points, but they have the champ, then under $100, and everything in between is weird old value picks that don't make any sense to buy.
Sounds like you're suffering from 'analysis paralysis'... from what you've said, you don't need the best (for web and moderate gaming) and if you plan to keep this system as long as your current one, anything from a 5700x3D (or even 5600x) upwards would be a great upgrade that will last you several years.

I'm not sure if the 13/14 gen Intel issues are resolved now, but 12th Gen is VERY competitive for pricing (12700k for under 200 or 12900k for 259), while still giving you access to PCIe5 and >GB ethernet (and up to z790 boards if that's what you want).

If you wanna go AMD and are averse to older (AM4) tech, then you'll want AM5 and an 870 motherboard would give you PCIe5 and USB4 - 7700/9700 CPUs will be transformative vs 6700k and the 6 cores (7600/9600) are very close, although we may see games needing(/preferring) 8 cores in the lifetime of the current gen consoles. 7500F are available extremely cheap, although don't have an iGPU.

But if you're happy to wait until the next generation of GPUs land, you may be able to pick up a 7800x3D (they've previously been as low as £315, but went up in the run up to 9800x3D coming out!)

Soooo... it all really depends what features you need/want - you can get better connectivity (PCIe5/USB4), or a smaller form factor (mATX/mITX) without spending stupid money, or could go value focused with a decent AM4 system, which would save you a couple of hundred, while still being a very worthwhile upgrade!

Hope that helps (P.S. post a thread in the upgrades section and we'll (by which I mean Tetras or micky) be able to advise the best outcome for whatever budget! )
:)

they lost 2% desktop market share to intel in the last 1/4 but think your right , but most of the sales atm are being driven by people upgrading from amd to amd the real test will be when all the covid buyers upgrade in a year or two
Intel switcher here! Had an intel CPU since Sandybridge I think. Been a good run but time to swap over and now is as good a time as any for me.

Price wise the 9700x seems to make sense seen it at £295 plus it runs super cool for small form factor building

7700/7700x seems stuck at £275-280 but you do get a cooler with the 7700

7800x3d at £430 is a huge jump up in price and sits in the same ballpark as the 9800x3d which is a much better option when its back in stock you might see the former drop soon

i5-14600k hovers around the £200 mark and like all the above should last you a good four years

Nice to see the 12700k still getting a mention. I run mine overclocked, but well below the default voltage on my mobo, and with well-tuned RAM it performs very well.

If I were in need of a new CPU though, I'd be all over the 9800x3D.

Yeah i think its a good chip, especially for the money..... under £200 as i write this.

Kind of funny that the 12700K is currently listed as less than the 12700KF by OCUK :) Personally, I have the 12700 (non-K) and I'm still very happy with it. If you're not going to go for one of the really, really high end GPUs I don't think you really need much more for most uses.

I'd also be buying AMD if I was buying today though.

9800x3d looks like the deserved winner of CPU of the year. I was going to just go the cheap route and get a 5700X3D to replace my 3700x, but the 9800X3D convinced me to upgrade the whole system. I didn't find options like the 7600 or 9700x enticing enough to upgrade.

If I was really going for a super cheap gaming system I would go for AMD Ryzen 5 7500F (95), cheap B650 motherboard (120), 32GB or 6000 CL30 RAM (90), 1TB NVME (45), PSU and case (100) and a 7800XT (380). Could build that for around £830.

If you hold the packaging of old Intel CPUs to your ear, you can hear the Intel shareholders weeping lol
both AMD and intel saw a decline last year , but not going to celebrate either or both are Vile multinational corporations AMD is not some plucky little underdog , on my 2nd amd graphics card you dont see me posting crap about Nvidia I just use what is best bang for the buck at the time

On my first AMD GPU after 3 generations of Nvidia, well done you're not an ass, you see a lot of Nvidia and Intel people posting crap about AMD. Intel have an entire website dedicated to poo posting about AMD.

same with processors you use what Is the best for you nothing winds me up more than pages of people running down one or the other

currently I have been back and forth over AM5 9000 series /socket 1700 i5-14600/13600 ( budget choice )

the 9700x seems to tick most of what I need from a cpu at £300 ish trying to convince myself about the 9800x3d but its a lot more money

The 9700X is a great chip, its still one of the best Gaming CPU's and yes a whole lot cheaper than the 9800X3D, i have my eye on one myself.

it does make me smile when people describe it as low end or entry level while having no concept of what most people use or buy

I wasn't sure if I'd see that much of a difference coming from a non x3d 5800 to a 9800x3d. Not with just a 4070ti.

But if anyone is on the fence with a similar setup well... it was well worth it. Sure my Cyberpunk benchmarks haven't changed much but in any game were the cpu is even slightly an issue the 1% and 0.1% lows have been gamechanging for me. I'm very very particular about stutter (just really really hate it) and I'm over the moon with the performance of the 9800x3d.

This is before we even get to emulation where it's really just a beast. Best upgrade since I made the jump to an ultrawide oled.
