Gamers, What's Your Audio Set Up?

The Platinums are lacking in in detail, 'omph' and soundstage. That said they have their moments, bass isn't too strong and fairly neutral in tone. Overall they do a reasonable job at good headphone sound.

It's clear Sony worked on their sound profiles (from a PS4 perspective, I don't have a PS5 yet). I've been playing God of War (2018) this week and the positional sound is really good with the Platinums. I'd also say the 3D audio is better than anything I've heard from Dolby Atmos for headphones (which I've also been impressed with). A real sense of height and depth to objects. So I have high hopes for Tempest 3D. That said it was a shame that only 4 games or so actually supported 3D audio on PS4. But the VSS on non-3D PS4 games is solid.
Thanks, pretty much as I thought - probably similar to the 3D pulse too.

I'd probably just jump up to a Audeze Penrose at that amount
Oh god, why did you have to go and mention these...

:eek::D:p

It's only money, right?

Sorry :D

But at least the Penrose will be a high quality.

Btw - that lovely headphone stand, is that hand made by yourself or purchased from somewhere?

Tempted to build something similar. I love the fact it can take two headphones. Would it be too much to ask measurements?

The added bluetooth over the arctis 7/Virtuoso gives them a bit more use, phone when one the train/plane etc, which goes to justifying the extra cost a little... And I've never had headphones with planar drivers before, they must be one of the cheapest ways to get into that sector. So there's that :D

The stand is handmade, not by me but by my dad, he's a dab hand at woodworking and made a few of these - not sure if he has any left that he didn't sell, but I can check. Can get measurements too.

Oh indeed the Penrose look intriguing.

Don't sweat measurements too much, only if you come by them. Certainly a lovely piece. Tempted to do something similar although not for a while yet.

It looks like the length of the top piece is something like 30 - 40cm. To comfortably fit both headphones.

Been watching the Penrose for months and still it seems they might be a few weeks away from these shores. Quality control might be a bit hit and miss at this early stage - quite a few reports of disconnects caused by touching/pressing part of the headset (maybe also a dodgy mic connection). Still think they'll be the best sounding wireless set though and may well jump for a set of them once the early niggles are dealt with.

I have the Pulse 3D at the moment and love the interaction with the PS5 - the UI elements that pop up for overall volume, mic mute and even chat/game volume mix are nice touches and they do actually give a pretty decent account of 3D audio. When it comes down to it though, they aren't as comfortable as I'd like and just don't sound as good as my Tygr 300r or Drop PC38x, even when plugged into the Dualsense (which seems to do a better job than the DS4 imho).

Think I might try the G6 on the PS5 later to see how that fairs with my two headsets.

Well, I'll report back on the Audeze Penrose, hopefully in a week or so if the 25th November release date is met. :D

Considering the Virtuoso SE which was next on the list, are £70 less but have no bluetooth connection, and OK sound quality vs the extremely good sound of the Penrose, I don't mind spending the bit extra. It'll be nice to have a big, comfy pair of wireless closed back headphones too, for general use over bluetooth.

Hope the 25th happens although sadly it seems they are only aiming to ship to overseas starting next week!!! They’ve previously promised that all US orders would be complete by now yet many of those still haven’t been despatched.

Seems as a small team they really are up against it timescale wise :(

Logitech G Pro X and Beyerdynamic DT770 both on my Rainforest wishlist and the Logitech G Pro X went on sale first.. it arrives Sunday. Might still buy the DT770 though.

Samson R850s. I just picked up a pair of these, and I have to say that for the price ($57) they are ridiculously good. They're semi-open studio headphones intended for mixing and monitoring. but they work nicely for gaming too. Best results are achieved after ~100 hours of burn in.

'Samson SR850 Review – Budget Studio Headphones.'

Enhanced with superb quality sound reproduction is possible with the 50mm drivers. The vocals sound great they are clear, crisp, and well-balanced.

The highs were also impressive, very transparent, and nicely detailed with enough volume you also get bright trembles. The mids were likely the most impressive when it comes to sound. The bass is fair enough, considering they offer accurate sound, so they’re not punchy as some other headphones.

The drivers are smooth and easy; they can hold up to pressure and seem to improve with time. They work well connected to an amp to give you a nice low end and more smooth bass.

They offer a nice range of listening sharpness from dub steps to classical music. It offers a pleasant tight sound that does not leak over to the mids during the lows.

The Samson 850 is also a great option for gamers since they give you the experience of being right there in the game because they present great HD sound.

All in all, these studio headphones are excellent in delivering precise audio output with an emphasis on solid bass response. You will get clear highs with superb performance providing consistent good sound quality.

Updated setup recently: New setup is Sonos Arc + Sub + two One SL's for 5.1.2 Atmos.
Sound is awesome, very impressed with the 3d sound produced by Atmos

Yeah I hated my platinums, they were pretty rubbish - the only gimmick they had going was that 3d audio exclusive to them which was kinda cool but not worth the money and game support was atrocious. 3D audio for the PS5 will see much greater support because it works on any headphones

That said, I plugged in a pair on Seinheiser GSP600's into the PS5 and wasn't that impressed with the Tempest 3D audio so went straight back to my Sonos Atmos system which sounds great. I'd say the headphones with Tempest 3D had a bigger horizontal sound stage with details that can be more easily heard at lower volume than the Sonos speakers but with no bass and I didn't find much effect in the height/ground channel that Sony advertised. I found the Sonos system offered better detail in the vertical/height channel than Tempest 3D. At the end of the day, no DSP is going to replace physical speakers and so I didn't buy into the Tempest 3D hype and I'm glad I did not because I was not impressed at all

I think the DT 770 is a good buy. Only other headphone that springs to mind is AKG K361/371 - AKG recent-ish closed back model, sub-£100 with that AKG sound signature. Super comfortable, very easy to drive and therefore use with anything.

EDIT - whoops! totally missed the 'closed' bit and just read 'headphones' until @EsaT posted below. Doh. In which only my second suggestion would be a closed set. Edited my response but gist is the same.

DT770.
DT880 isn't closed. For sound isolation difference between open and "semi"open is cosmetic.

Do you guys reckon the dt 1770 pros would be worth the price premium or not from the dt 770 pros ?

That's a difficult question because there's a few things to consider, some of it subjective. And I haven't heard either so can't draw on experience.

I personally wouldn't consider the DT 1770 Pros as that is too much on a set of closed headphones. I'm more drawn to open-back headphones. The most expensive headphones I've bought so far are the AKG K712s and if I was going into the £300-400 range I'd be looking very, very carefully at reviews of everything in that price bracket. That said I do think I would consider the open-backed equivalents (DT 1990 Pro) as I do really enjoy the DT 990s.

I haven't got a PS5 yet so can't speak from experience with Tempest 3D although I have read lots of mixed thoughts on it. Everyone hears differently and not everyone can hear spatial or 3D audio (not saying that's the case here, but worth remembering). There is a lot of subjectivity. And at launch Sony only have the 5 HRTF profiles. Also developers may support audio is different ways too, hence why I think people are singing the praises of Demon Souls compared to the other launch games.

Although I'm good with basic stereo I definitely have a preference for VSS or 3D audio. And whilst impressed with Dolby Atmos for headphones or Sony's 3D, far too few games supported 3D audio this gen. That's why Sony (and Microsoft) putting much more emphasis on 3D audio is really encouraging. The PS5 has the equivalent of a Jaguar CPU processing power for audio alone. Just much more emphasis on better audio and support from the off.

As an aside I've notice Dolby Atmos and DTS for headphones is on sale atm for Xbox and PC, so I'm planning on trying the latter to compare to Windows Sonic/Dolby Atmos.

Can I get a recommendation on behalf of a friend, please? He's looking for a headset to use wired with a DualSense controller. I was going to suggest the new Sennheiser/Drop collab (think it's the PC38X), but figured you guys here would be able to offer some feedback on it, or viable options. Cheers!

PC38x and Dualsense work very well together - seems the Dualsense has a little more drive behind it as it seems to get the PC38x to more than adequate volume levels.

As a great sounding and convenient solution for the PS5, I don't think there is a lot to beat them, unless a mic isn't essential or they want to go down the slippery slope of external Dacs/Amps etc.

That's good to know, thanks! Yeah, he's looking for a relatively simple solution, and prefers open backed. Sounds like these will do the trick for him!
