Games needing SSDs

It seems recently several games have come out requiring SSDs as they won't run properly on HDDs. Usually I put multiplayer games on my 2tb NVME and single player games on my 4tb HDD but I'm running out of space on my NVME.

My question is these new single player games requiring an SSD as minimum spec - do they mean SATA SSD will suffice or do they mean NVME SSD which costs a lot more?

Also are external SSD's which connect through USB any good because they seem to be really cheap?

I think any ssd will be fine but you'll not notice much of an uplift between nvme and ssd. I guess depends on the game though

They mean any SSD, but if a game requires DirectStorage then I believe that's going to be nvme only.

Very interesting. I thought Alan Wake 2 used DirectStorage but it was not, it annoyed me game loaded for around 15 secs everytime Sage and Alan died. I think the reason Remedy not used DirectStorage because Alan Wake 2 had very limited resources. Hopefully Control 2 will be first Remedy game to use DirectStorage.
