Have you installed these....

zaza: have you installed this optimiser that Subroutine left for you? These quite often fix the issues with dual core CPU's and gaming, i have the top link installed myself. Sorry if you have, just that you havent mentioned it :)

yes, I'm just going to see if it made any difference.

yes, that's right, but isn't overclocking this processor 600mhz a little extreme? I'm only using the stock heatsink too..

Not really 2.4 ghz should be a gimme on stock vcore.

since I can build and maintain a pc, I think I can manage overclocking it. It was ages since I did it though, I seem to remember using a program of some sort too, it came with a mobo disk. Anyway, with my asrock dual sata 2 mobo in mind, am I going to have to mess with jumpers, or is it just all in cmos? What should I change, and to what value if I want a 400mhz increase? Thanks

Have the same mobo as you, and labels are a bit different to what Easyrider has suggested. In 'chipset' change the link speed (top one) to 800Mhz, and then in CPU config select Async at the top, adjust CPU speed (FSB) to 240, and the divider to 166 as above. Leave the multi, but try a higher voltage if you find the above is unstable.

I managed to get a 1:1 with my RAM but you can tinker with that some other time.

I did what you said since you have the same board, but it wouldn't boot.
I changed the link speed to 800mhz, the setting to Async, the cpu freq to 240, and the memory clock to 166mhz, but it wouldn't boot past the bios, did I miss something? What's HT?

also, in bios, it says my cpu core temp is 57C, isn't that already higher than it should be?

! Thats way too high! I wouldn't attempt an overclock on that until you get that temp down asap! needs to be high 30's max in BIOS

You must also disable Cool&Quiet for the OC to work... sorry should have mentioned that

better heatsink? What should I get? £20-30? and maybe this case isn't helping things, the rest of the temperatures are all nearly 60c idle.

Scythe Infinity Heatpipe CPU Cooler (Socket 478, 775, AM2, 754, 939, 940) (HS-006-SY) Will this do as opposed to the stock heatsink?

then it may be heat thats causing your issues, even the stock cooler should be adequate at stock speeds, try making sure your heatsink is attached properly and that you used the right amount of thermal compound. Its probably something really obvious thats been overlooked, it usually is lol, i do it lol

EDIT: and dont forget that over 60C and your heading into dangerous territory, you dont wanna damage your rig at all

what sort of settings are you running oblivion in?

I found that if I turned off bloom, self shadowing and grass shadowing things improved greatly

hdr had little or no impact on my game play but bloom distroyed it for some reason, self shadowing in oblivion looks carp, they all have weird beard shaped shadows

grass shadowing i put back on but it does help your fps

and as others have said...2gb of ram

(there seem to be a lot of people who hav problems with the 3800+ and games stuttering, every time i come on these forums theres another person going "why are my games running badly in my killer 3800+ with SLI blah blah rig" and everyone goes..."try the hotfix, etc"...and it never seems to help, notice its just 3800+s

(or is it a problem with a lot A64 X2s, just more people buy 3800+s coz theyr cheap?)

tbh I think thats it, mine has never given an issue at all with games since i first installed it, still installed the optimisation patch to be sure. Although, it looks like heat is his problem atm

If you want to see a big improvement in ping and gameplay then get yourself a decent sound card my ping when from 30ms to 15ms and 90% of my lag is gone now in BF2 ;)
Also try putting image quality to high quality i found BF2 performs better with this than with it set to high performance.

If everything is running hot as zaza mentioned, then I'd look at the airflow into and out of the case first.

Do things improve if you leave the side of the case off? If they do then have a look at the airflow through the case. Do you have enough case fans? and is it tidy enough inside the case to allow the air to flow freely?
