Games that surprised you

Dying light +expansion.

I thought I was bored by first person sandbox games especially one that appeared relatively simple and adding nothing particularly new. Loved the look & feel of the game, It was very well presented and rather polished ( I had the enhanced edition with the following DLC).

I've heard that the original Deus Ex is also a masterpiece but sadly i never played it

I'm the same with MGS tho :)

For its day, it was magnificent. Nowadays, a lot of the really innovative stuff has been done by other games, so it's not as special. I still play it from time to time though, for nostalgia's sake.

I disagree with DXHR being overly linear. Each level had lots of routes to the objective. The boss fights let it down though, because they were designed by a different studio who didnt have the faintest notion of what a DX game was.

Alan Wake. I was completely unprepared for how mind numbingly dull this game would be. After all the hype and screenshots and discussion over it maybe being an Xbox exclusive, etc, for it to be so unrelentingly boring was a massive shock.

Assassin's Creed: Unity.

After all the negative press surrounding it, I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I'd actually go as far as to say that it's my favourite game in the series, and the only one I've bothered to finish since AC2.

Hyper Light Drifter. I knew it was up my street from the footage - a fast paced Secret of Mana meets Dark Souls - but it turned out to be the best thing I've played in a years. Dark Souls 3 turned up after and, while good, felt like the lesser game. So much for high budgets and big dev teams!

Shadow Warrior(2013) surprised me, I played it a couple of times but didn't really get into it, then gave it another shot after reading a lot of people liked it, but I didn't expect I would end up finding it as enjoyable as I did.

Saint's Row 2 is also a good shout, I saw the advert for it and thought it looked pants, but got it in a THQ bundle (I think) and ended up very much enjoying that as well.

This, the most blad of shooters hidden behind one of the best stories.

Anyone who hasn't played it should for a couple of quid.

Yh really a great story, gameplay is standard.

Another shout for Dying Light, absolute blast. SP campaign was a bit meh but gameplay and co-op excellent.

The one that comes most to mind for recent times is Hotline: Miami.

I'd heard it was fun, but was amazed just how good the game was - the music and the style fitted the theme so perfectly, combat was brutally tough but fair, and it had enough variation in weapons and masks to keep it interesting to the end. A real little gem. It surprised me by not only being a little bit of fun, but actually being one of my favourite games of 2014 (when I played it).

Edit: notice really good shouts for Spec Ops: The Line and Riddick as well. Would have to agree with those too.

GTA: Vice City - I played the original on the PS One and couldn't believe how far the game had come along, totally hooked on the series since.

HL2 - Even with all the hype behind it, I love this game and still play it every now and then

:)

Its more vocal apologists will try to tell you that the gameplay was made intentionally dull to make a point on war not being fun. :D

Yeah, it's an odd one in that respect. I was just about to give up on it as another dull shooter with well-worn mechanics, after what felt like a fair bit of game time actually. When all of sudden a little plot detail caught my attention. Then before I knew it I was so intrigued as to what was going on I was carried along and I honestly didn't even notice the gameplay mechanics after that, the narrative developments and shocks completely drew me in and carried me to the end. I then felt the need to sit quietly contemplating it for a little while. I knew it would stick with me as an experience I've not had in another game, and indeed it has.

Never has a game made me feel genuinely bad about something like that one particular sequence (those who have completed know). The gameplay is generic as it comes but quite a powerful story of war.

The Witcher, never heard of the game and not sure why I even bought it, but really surprised me how much I enjoyed it.

Faster Than Light (FTL) - best game that I have played in a long time. Only bought it in a sale to get a steam badge, had no intention of ever playing it. Luckily though I tried it out just to see and was instantly hooked.

DayZ Standalone.

Had not played the mod at the time. Had no idea what to expect. It is deeply flawed but easily the most intense and heart pounding game I had played at that point. Totally different.

Other than that original far cry for that first real open world/multiple approaches experience
