games with a good story

final fantasy 7 is the daddy of all story based games. the best, end of.

Knights of the old Republic 1, Final Fantasy 7 and Baldur's Gate series (you can import your character from 1 into 2) would be my best ranking story games. The elder scrolls series, warcraft and a few of the other popular series have developed a decent lore, and backlog by now too.
Dark Messiah is quite fun as a little story developed fps/rpg too, and stuff like Monkey Island, are known for thier enjoyable, yet inane plots too.

Baldur's Gate 2 , there is no better game, period. Best story, most magical, most epic feeling, intelligent and sometimes very difficult combat
The best story ever created for gaming is Xenogears. Its simply off its rocket nuts (If you have played it you will no doubt agree.) Then follows FF7 
Oh the Shadow Hearts series for the PS2 has a great story aswell.
Generally Bioware games have good stories for the PC. Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire etc.
Also, Neverwinter Nights 2 was OK, not great but OK.
Breath of Fire 4 has a good story and is out on the PC, although a tad old now (PS1 days )
I thought Oblivion has a great story, well sto'ries'. Morrowind is good aswell.
It does seem though that the best videogames stories where from the PS1 days. Its sad to think that those days are behind us now... its all about high production, short games with crappy stories now.

Vampire Masquerade 2: Bloodlines Its a great game with a good storyline, a bit buggy in parts, but you can live with that

Also like to suggest anything from the Broken Sword series, The Runaway 1 & 2 and Grim Fandango.
Soul Reaver had quite a good story imho. Dark Messiah was fun if a little anti-climatic.
Vampire Masquerade: Redemption is real winner of an RPG and can be had for pennies now.
