Are there any new or recent games that have fully deformable terrain? I'd like everything to be destructable so I can demolish buildings and blow holes in the ground, preferably in 3D FPS style. Anything like this out there?

Only game I can think of that has this is Red Faction and its not exactly New or recent as its something like 5 or more years old.

It did have its limits on the PS2 version as it would stop allowing you to blow through stuff after awhile, can't say about the PC version but i would guess it would be better there.

Asif.

Soldner is great fun, it was just terribly buggy on release so the bad name stuck with it.

After a few patches the bugs started to go and it was great fun. I used to spend hours with KillerKebab running/driving/flying around bombing everyone and it was always a laugh.

Red Faction just had pre-set bits of wall that were destructible, iirc.

The only game I ever saw that allowed to you to flatten an entire level was UFO - Enemy Unknown, and that was a tile based game rather than proper 3D. I still play it for this reason though - once you'd researched guided missiles it changed your tactics completely. Forget fighting your way through an alien mothership, you could just open the door and let rip with the missiles until the interior was just a big smoking ruin.

Yep it was called Geo something.

I remember making really long tunnels on it and setting traps by blowing away so much of a bridge and then blowing the final pieces so the person i was playing with would fall :D

If you want a game with great Pyhsics and you can fiddle around with a lot of things and make cool vehicles / contraptions then get Half-Life 2 and Garrys Mod for it there is no deformable land.

Alpha Centauri has deformable terrain, but again that's a tile based strategy game. (Not that it matters when you're talking about one of the best games in existance :D )

The reason there aren't many true 'deformable 3d' games is because the mathematics behind calculating a chunk of building being ripped out, and making make it look realistic, is pretty intensive.

Multiple processors should be better at handling it, so in probably a year or so physics will be passe - the new craze will be proper bullet holes when you shoot people in CS4 (or walking round with an arm hanging off) :D

In a word, no.

FULLY deformable terrain is something which would be very hard to pull off in a full scale 3D FPS game due to the sheer scale. Apart from anything else you'd have to do so much QA to ensure that bad things don't happen that it wouldn't be practical to actually have a decent game in there as well.

I mean lets say you are playing this game and decide to keep 'drilling' a hole in the wall/floor. What happens when you reach the edge of the defined level? Do you just end up bumping into an invisible wall? And what about the actual game progression.... what happens if you get stuck due to the deformable terrain and can't continue?

Fully deformable terrain is a level designers worst nightmare and I certainly can't see it being implemented in the near future.

Incidentally, for all the hype there really wasn't that much you could do in Red Faction 1/2. Yeah so you could shoot out a few meaningless walls, blow craters in the floor etc but essentially you were still being led down a scripted path.

bro was looking at a tank sim that had deformable terrain or so he said..
i think is was this: http://gamershell.com/news/35627.html

i'm just downloading the demo to have a look see, as i can't find much game info.

Everything, which will be encountered on the way of tank or projectile, can be destroyed, without exceptions. The landscape being deformed makes it possible to create new landscapes and different ground constructions.

Geo-Mod IIRC :)

Used to spend like 20minutes tunneling in a multiplayer map against my brother :p

same here but on PS2 and i would get annoyed as we did'nt finish our tunnel loads of times as it would stop allowing us to dig furthe
